Villa really are crowding out Newcastle in the middle of the park at the moment and after winning possession a deflected Jonathan Kodjia from the left almost goes in.

Karl Darlow does well to tip the ball over for a corner, which comes to nothing.

Half an hour gone and there's no way of telling the title chasers from the strugglers. Rafael Benitez looks a bit restless and Steve Bruce seems pretty satisfied.

Almost a sniff of goal for Dwight Gayle, but the jet-heeled Newcastle striker cannot get on the end of Jonjo Shelvey's ball over the top and it's a Villa goal-kick.

Lucas Perez has put Arsenal in front against National League side Sutton in the FA Cup.

Half an hour played there, and it's 1-0 to the Gunners.

Newcastle 0-0 Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Henri Lansbury catches DeAndre Yedlin in the chops with an arm. Looked inadvertent, but that's no consolation to the Newcastle defender, who needs a bit of treatment. He's okay though.

Some sloppy defending by Newcastle leads to a Villa corner, but again nothing doing. Scott Hogan is looking lively and a real threat for Steve Bruce's men.

Alan Hutton marauds down the right for Aston Villa, leading some decent possession for the visitors. But they cannot create a chance and Newcastle are able to clear their lines.

Scott Hogan gets away down the left for Villa but he has no support and his cross dribbles into the arms of Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow.

Dwight Gayle wants to get on the end of things so he will isolate himself sometimes. He doesn't want to get in Mo Diame's way because he knows he might create something for him.

It's all a bit flat at St James' Park. That's been a rarity this season. Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce will be chuffed.

Newcastle's Jack Colback goes crunching into a challenge on Conor Hourihane but gets away with a talking to. Probably about right.

Some good skills from Jonathan Kodjia on the left comes to nothing for Villa, who feel pretty hard done by for not getting a free kick soon after when Conor Hourihane is sent sprawling.

Just the one chance so far. 

It's not quite happening for the Magpies so far. Dwight Gayle has 20 goals so far this season but hasn't really had a look in so far.

Aston Villa's Mile Jedinak is doing a good job protecting his back four.

But Conor Hourihane's set-piece drifts harmlessly over everyone and out of play on the far side.
