Unfortunately, as much as we wanted Gianfranco Zola to come in and continue the good work of Gary Rowett, it started under bad circumstances and progressively got worse.

I believe he was trying his utmost to get things going, but he was swimming against the tide from the outset.

It needed changing, and there's been a real shift in mood and confidence this week. Harry Redknapp coming in has given everyone a lift.

Aston Villa v Birmingham City (12:00 BST)

Since 2002, the results in league meetings between these two rivals have come in pairs.

    • 2002-03: Two wins for Birmingham
    • 2003-04: Two draws
    • 2004-05: Two wins for Birmingham
    • 2005-06: Two wins for Villa
    • 2007-08: Two wins for Villa
    • 2009-10: Two wins for Villa
    • 2010-11: Two draws

So far in 2016-17? One draw... So, based on the pattern of the past 15 years, is another draw therefore on the cards this afternoon?

  19. Has Harry recharged batteries?published at 11:41 British Summer Time 23 April 2017

Aston Villa v Birmingham City (12:00 BST)

    BBC Sport at Villa Park

They took obvious delight here at Villa Park when Birmingham City were relegated from the Premier League in 2011.

An otherwise meaningless final day 1-0 win over Liverpool was played out to a constant backdrop from Villa's taunting Holte End of "Going Down, Going Down", as scoreflashes came in of Blues' eventual demise.

The Holte End hope to have cause to be in full voice again six years on, but Harry Redknapp's out-of-the-blue appointment may have recharged batteries across the city.

Half an hour before kick-off and the only sound from either set of fans so far is the visitors reminding their team to 'Keep Right On To The End Of The Road'.

Which it was, just six days ago, for Gianfranco Zola!

  20. Redknapp 'not paid if Blues go down'published at 11:37 British Summer Time 23 April 2017

Aston Villa v Birmingham City (12:00 BST)

New Blues boss Harry Redknapp says he will not be paid for his three-game stint in charge if he fails to keep them in the Championship.

"I'm not being paid. It doesn't bother me though," Redknapp told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I have got a bonus. It's not a massive one, but I said 'if I don't keep you up, I don't want paying'."

The former West Ham, Tottenham and Portsmouth manager revealed he had a similar arrangement when he worked as an adviser to Derby County at the end of last season.
