Marcelo plays a ball across goal, which Cristiano Ronaldo takes and, instead of playing in Gareth Bale, he fires over.

Lionel Messi is back on the pitch holding a tissue onto his mouth. Are you even allowed to do that?

While that was happening, Cristiano Ronaldo forced a good save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen after cutting in from the wing. That happened from the move that felled Messi.

And now Gareth Bale takes a first-time effort which is weak. He could have controlled it.

Lionel Messi is down injured with his mouth covered in blood. It went unnoticed at the time but Marcelo caught him with his elbow accidentally. This doesn't look good.

Real Madrid are in here, after breaking at pace but Karim Benzema's weak shot is straight at keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barca counter and Luis Suarez's attempted volley comes off the side of his foot and goes well wide.

    An open game now.

Today is Gareth Bale's 100th La Liga appearance. Only two Britons have more, David Beckham (116) and Gary Lineker (103).

There were plenty in the Spanish media who thought his injury was a blessing in disguise, with Isco his likely replacement. Unfortunately for them, Bale recovered in time.

Real Madrid appear to have switch their front three positions, Gareth Bale is on the right now and he's offside as he tries to head on a long ball forward.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 12 mins

It wouldn't be El Clasico without some cards. Lionel Messi gets involved in this game for the first time and a bit of skill sends him away before Casemiro hacks him down on the halfway line.

Seth Gogo Egoeh: How was that not a penalty for Real Madrid? Poor officiating again! I'm not impressed.

Brayo: If Barca's era is over then it probably came in too fast

Barcelona have their second effort and this one is well hit, Jordi Alba's cross reaches Luis Suarez and his 20-yard effort is just wide.

This is better now from the Catalans, a lot better.

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta, whose influence is definitely waning this season, has his first shot of the game but it's weak and off target and only goes as far as a Real Madrid defender, who can clear.

Gareth Bale - back in the Real team after two matches out injured - is flagged offside as he chases a long ball forward but it was borderline. He could have had a 45-yard run at goal had the flag stayed down.

Barcelona come forward for the first time but Casemiro wins the ball and Real break at speed. Toni Kroos plays a perfect ball to Cristiano Ronaldo, whose shot from the edge of the box is saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

An early goal is coming, I can feel it in my bones.

The last 0-0 El Clasico in La Liga was 2002. The last at the Bernabeu in the league was 1987. So surely we'll have some goals.

It's all Real so far as Cristiano Ronaldo does a step over and plays in full-back Dani Carvajal down the right wing but his cross is cleared.

Then Luka Modric plays in a cross which Karim Benzema can't quite control.

  16. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 2 mins

Early attack for Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo wants a penalty as he goes down after touching the ball away from Samuel Umtiti, who brings him down. It's not clear in real time, but on second viewing, that should have been a penalty. A lucky break for Barca.
