    Middlesbrough 0-0 Southampton

Boro crack out a training ground routine from the corner, working the ball back to Adam Forshaw, whose cross is headed just wide by George Friend at the back post.

    SHOT ON TARGET KLAXON.

Adam Clayton drives at the Saints defence and is felled but the ball falls to Patrick Bamford, who fires in an effort that is held by Fraser Forster.

Wait, Anthony Taylor has given the free-kick for a foul on Clayton. Reverse the klaxon.

Alvaro Negredo to take - his effort clips the top of the wall and balloons over for a corner...

Shane Long swings in a good delivery towards Jay Rodriguez, who is just put off his shot by his marker but the ball falls to Ryan Bertrand, free in the area...

Ugh, the left-back makes a hash of it and dribbles a poor effort wide.

Worry for Saints as Jeremy Pied lands awkwardly on his arm.

The French right-back has missed effectively the whole season with a knee injury, but fortunately he's up and running soon enough.

Boro were threatening in the Saints area prior to Pied's fall but could not fashion a shot.

...nothing doing as it's headed over by Martin Caceres.

    Middlesbrough 0-0 Southampton

Boro's promotion last season was something of a pyrrhic victory really.

They tried to clean-sheet their way to safety but forgot to score goals and then started conceding at exactly the wrong time, ultimately ensuring relegation.

Aitor Karanka was sacked (or "left by mutual decision"). They face the prospect of their best players being picked off by other clubs.

Seven years out of the Premier League and straight back down.

Worth it for the rush of promotion and some of the highs along the way though, right?

    Meanwhile, corner to Southampton...

Or could Boro take advantage? They attack down the right but Fabio is caught offside to ruin a good opening.

Calum Chambers is back on. All sorted, for now at least.

Chambers has limped very gingerly over to the sidelines. Not sure if he's coming off.

Meanwhile, Boro are playing with 10 - can Saints take advantage?

Calum Chambers is down with what looks like a foot or ankle injury.

Not looking great for the on-loan Arsenal defender.

This stoppage is about the only thing of note to happen in the past five minutes.

Martin Caceres prefers wearing massive shorts, think basketball style.

He just about fights his way through the excess fabric to make another interception after his poor first touch had threatened to let Boro in.

Marten de Roon then clatters Oriol Romeu in central midfield. Putting a marker down perhaps.

Saints have plenty of pace and ability up front - Shane Long bursts through the middle but the ball escapes him to be gathered up by Boro keeper Brad Guzan.

Southgate won't be scouting Stewart Downing for another call-up, of course, but the Boro winger does well to get on the outside of his man, only to deliver a poor cross that's easily cleared.

England boss Gareth Southgate is back at the Riverside - could he be scouting out Ben Gibson for a possible call-up?

Ooof, Patrick Bamford almost has a great chance inside the first two minutes as he takes down a ball over the top but Martin Caceres makes an excellent last-ditch interception to deny the recalled striker.

Could be a Riverside farewell for a few Boro players today - you'd think captain Ben Gibson won't be short of suitors after impressing in an otherwise largely hapless side this season.

Surely Alvaro Negredo will return to parent club Valencia? Will Adama Traore move on after a second consecutive relegation?

The teams are on their way out at the Riverside.

    We'll be under way shortly.

If you don't recognise a few names in the Southampton line-up today, that's because Claude Puel has made a remarkable seven changes.

Centre-back Martin Caceres, formerly of Barcelona and Juvenus, makes his debut and there's a first start for right-back Jeremy Pied, who has been absent with a long-standing knee injury.

    Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough head coach Steve Agnew: "After the disappointment of the other night, it has been an emotional time and understandably so, and I am no different. I feel responsibility for what has happened.

"But it's not about my future, it's not about my situation, it's about Middlesbrough Football Club.

"It's about us understanding where we are, it's about how we finish strongly in these last couple of games and then we regroup, have a good summer and make sure that we're in the fight to bounce back to the Premier League as quickly as we possibly can."

So who's to blame for Middlesbrough's meek exit from the Premier League? Former boss Aitor Karanka? The players?

Head coach Steve Agnew reckons he should cop some of it...
