Back in August, I was at the Riverside for Match of the Day for Middlesbrough's return to the Premier League. Following the 1-1 draw with Stoke there was an optimistic view that Boro could avoid an immediate return to the Championship, where they had spent the previous seven seasons.

Nine months later relegation was confirmed at Chelsea on Monday, with Middlesbrough having won only five times in 36 league matches.

Sofiane Boufal scored a wonderful goal for Saints when these teams met at St Mary's in December.

However, goals have been at a premium for Boro all season and just recently for Southampton, who have to regain their scoring touch to ensure a top-10 finish.

Let's give Claude Puel some credit for what he has done in his first season at Southampton. They have always been comfortable in mid-table, and reached the final of the League Cup. 

True, they have never looked like repeating last season's sixth-place finish but that has to go down as an over-achievement, so this year has not been a backward step.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, went down with a whimper.

You cannot blame Steve Agnew, who took charge in March, for that - it was predecessor Aitor Karanka who set the tone for the season. The times I saw them under him in the first half of the season, they never committed enough players forward - their three midfielders just sat in. 

Prediction: 1-2  

Middlesbrough's relegation was confirmed in their 3-0 defeat by champions Chelsea. 

They make one change from that game - Patrick Bamford comes in for Adama Traore.

Southampton manager Claude Puel has gone a bit rogue and made seven changes from their defeat by Arsenal.

Among the new starters are Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez. 

There's also a place on the bench for Charlie Austin, who has been out since December with a dislocated shoulder.

Southampton: Forster, Pied, Caceres, Yoshida, Bertrand, Clasie, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Boufal, Rodriguez, Long.  

Subs: Hassen, Stephens, Targett, Davis, Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Austin

So, it's an end-of-season game, with nothing much riding on it. Time to give a few fringe players or those returning from injury a run out, right?

You saw this game in the fixture list and thought, "nil-nil".

An already relegated Middlesbrough, who've scored a paltry 26 goals all season, against a Southampton side who've score just once in a five-game winless run.

Doesn't exactly bode well for excitement, does it?
