  1. goal

GOAL - Arsenal 1-0 Evertonpublished at 7 mins

    Hector Bellerin

What were we saying about Hector Bellerin?!

He gives Arsenal the lead they deserve, but only after Danny Welbeck makes a late bid for miss of the season. Ball across goal from the left, Welbeck only has to tap into an empty net, but completely misses his kick. Bellerin, though, is there to sweep up and save blushes.

Arsenal keeping their end of the bargain.

Arsenal seem to have made Everton left-back Leighton Baines a target early on - everything coming down his side and the Gunners getting lots of joy.

    Vincent Kompany

    Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

You'll never see a simpler goal in the rest of, er, this season.

Kevin de Bruyne swings in a corner, Vincent Kompany has the freedom of the Watford penalty area, and the Manchester City skipper heads powerfully in.

City have one hand on third place.

Here they come, Arsenal's players wearing some rather snazzy blue tracksuit tops. A huge banner is passed over the crowd - there's just about enough of them to mean it keeps moving.

I think Wenger is right that they have to concentrate on their game and forget what is happening at Liverpool. He's also right not to mention a word about his contract until after the FA Cup.

I don’t expect to see Arsene Wenger there next season. I think he is giving himself a get out by not committing yet.

If they lose the final and don’t get in the top four, he is going to start next season on the back foot in terms of supporters - it’s not healthy for anyone.

The recruitment for Arsenal and the players they’ve bought over the past few years hasn’t been good enough. It’s time for a change. They’re not going to win the league unless they mix it up.

So, what do you reckon? Arsenal to sneak into the top four, or too little, too late?

Is Ross Barkley on his way out of Goodison Park?

And, more importantly, what have you been doing for the past 20 years? Arsenal have been playing Champions League football, but how have you filled two decades?

    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on Football Focus

It appears Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is going to stay on for another year or two and, if that is the case, I am not sure why they have kept it such a big secret.

Arsenal have got next week's FA Cup final to think about but I don't think that will affect the result, because they can still finish in the top four and they have to go for the win in case Manchester City or Liverpool slip up.

Everton will finish seventh whatever happens and they will make a game of it, but the Gunners are on a good run and I think they will come out on top.

    Match of the Day commentator

Arsenal have not allowed Manchester City or Liverpool to shake them off in the pursuit of a top-four finish but they know that even a seventh win in eight games might not be enough this time.

The Gunners may yet earn an additional shot at qualifying for the Champions League for a 21st consecutive season by forcing a play-off. For that to happen, they need to finish level on points, goal difference and goals scored with either City or Liverpool.

A sub-plot to the game is the personal battle for the Premier League's Golden Boot between Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, who have 24 and 23 goals respectively.

Both have now been usurped by Tottenham's Harry Kane but the Belgian, external or the Chilean, external would strengthen their summer bargaining position if they can overhaul him.

  19. Has Barkley started his final Everton game?published at 14:42 British Summer Time 21 May 2017

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Emirates Stadium

Everton manager Ronald Koeman insists Ross Barkley's exclusion is tactical - but is he also signposting the future without a player who is currently refusing to sign a new contract?

Koeman has made it clear he wants an answer from the 23-year-old in the next couple of days or Barkley will be sold, so this looks like a significant call.

Arsenal make three changes to the team that beat Sunderland, most notably with Danny Welbeck replacing Olivier Giroud up top. The three-man defence remains - better late than never.
