    Everton 1-0 Stoke

Wayne Rooney has found his range. Will that goal be the catalyst to rediscovering his confidence?

The forward clips a delightful ball out to Leighton Baines, who pulls it back to Davy Klaassen on the edge of the box.

The Dutchman goes with the outside of his right boot, but his dipping cross drops only into the hands of Jack Butland.

Now it's Everton with a chance at the other end. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has found himself in acres of space, he takes a touch, steadies himself... and there comes a sliding Kurt Zouma to block the shot.

Great recovery from the on-loan Chelsea defender.

    Everton 1-0 Stoke

Leighton Baines has the sweetest of sweet left feet. The Everton full-back fires a crossfield pass all over 60 yards into the path of Wayne Rooney, but the forward can't gather cleanly.

Stoke's play is a little more scrappy since the break, but twinkle toes from Xherdan Shaqiri sends the winger clear on the right before Everton scramble the cross clear.

End to end at the minute.

Beautiful ball from Erik Pieters. Delicious. The cliched 'corridor of uncertainty', but there's no one there to tuck it home as it whizzes across the face of goal from Stoke's left.

Mark Hughes would have been gambling on that in his heyday.

    Everton 1-0 Stoke

There's a battle for you. Sandro Ramirez goes shoulder to shoulder with Mame Biram Diouf and gives away the free-kick.

Stoke look to loft it forward, but it's headed out of play for an Everton goal-kick.

Goodison Park looks a little more settled after that Rooney goal at the end of the first half.

Everton were slow to get into the game, but it was a great way to end the half.

Wayne Rooney first received the ball 25 yards outside the box, and he laid it off. He then made his way into the box only to find the ball heading straight for him.

What a goal, what emotion and what celebration!

    Wayne Rooney (45 mins)

Wayne Rooney heads in for Everton, and the fairytale return is alive!

Everton had failed to string two passes together today, but the first time they keep hold of the ball it ends up in the back of the Stoke net.

Rooney was involved earlier in the move as the ball was whipped wide to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who delivered a teasing ball into the box for the striker to rise and nod beyond Jack Butland.

    Lovely move.

Remember Harry Kane taking corners for England at the Euros? Well, Everton are employing a similar strategy and getting new centre forward Sandro Ramirez to take theirs.

Better than that, both forwards are over there - Sandro rolls it short to Wayne Rooney and, unsurprisingly, the Toffees look a little short on numbers in the box.

That's a foul throw. Cue a Twitter meltdown about how much these players get paid and they can't even take a throw-in...

Mame Biram Diouf is the culprit. He looks baffled.

  16. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Everton 0-0 Stoke

Darren Fletcher weights a perfectly judged long pass out to Bojan on the left, but Michael Keane just stands up and collects a weak cross from the diminutive forward.

Davy Klaassen hasn't seen much of the ball so far for the Toffees, but the former Ajax playmaker finds a bit of space on the half-way as Everton sense a break.

    It comes to nothing.

    Everton 0-0 Stoke

Wayne Rooney has done more in his own box than Stoke's so far. England's all-time leading scorer meets another Xherdan Shaqiri corner to get rid of any danger.

Mame Biram Diouf fancies his chances with a half-volley from the corner of the Everton box, but he gets that all wrong and it trickles wide of the opposite post.

So much for all those Premier League goals this season...

It looks like Everton are trying to go around the outside of Stoke...

It's pretty congested in the middle and the hosts have opted to hit the flanks with Leighton Baines and Dominic Calvert-Lewin so far.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 29 mins

    Everton 0-0 Stoke

Joe Allen goes into the book.

He pulls back Wayne Rooney as the Everton forward looks to surge over the halfway line.

He's already paid out for a new haircut, now the Welshman will need to dig into his pockets to settle his booking fine too.

  20. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Everton 0-0 Stoke

Everton have already played two competitive games in the Europa League this season, you wouldn't think so from this performance so far as Ronald Koeman's side aren't looking at all sharp in their passing.

Phil Jagielka stitches Leighton Baines up with what looked like an easy ball, and Stoke get a throw.
