    First day of the season. No feeling quite like it. Level on points with the future champions. Joint top scorers. Braving shorts and shirt sleeves on the terraces. New kit, new signings, new optimism. It doesn’t get better than this.

    Sadly, it actually doesn’t get better than this for 23 of our Championship teams, but let’s not dwell on that.

    This is a day reserved solely for unbridled positivity. For Sunderland, for Derby, for Nottingham Forest and for Millwall. Until about half nine at least.
