When asked if he had a message for the fans who booed him following the penalty shoot-out defeat by Dunfermline at Tynecastle, he said: "I don't say anything, I will quietly continue to do my job professionally, believing in the work that we do. Of course things need to improve."

He added: "If we had the urgency and intensity that we did when we felt that we needed to push at the end for the entirety of the 90 minutes then we'd be discussing a different situation."

Hibs head coach Neil Lennon was "delighted" with his side's 3-0 win at Alloa, a result that means they top Group D ahead of runners-up Ross County.

"It was all about winning the game really and I am so pleased with the players so far," he told Radio Scotland. "They have done everything I asked of them and won again in convincing fashion.

"We are going into the season with a lot of optimism, but the real test is ahead of us.

"We are playing a proven Premiership team next week [Partick Thistle] who finished sixth last season, so we are not getting carried away.

"We have still got bits and pieces to do, but the core of the squad is good. They have performed well for the club over the last two years and we just want that to continue."

Lennon had praise for Fraser Murray, the 18-year-old midfielder who scored the opener and set up the first of Simon Murray's brace.

"He's a great little player, we have high hopes for him," he added. "He is deceptive; he is quite slight but has good feet and not only scored the goal but laid on the second with a great pass.

"I thought Martin Boyle was outstanding again as well. He has taken his game on to another level at the moment."

Hibs and Ross County progress to the knock-out stage in the League Cup.

After all that, Hearts are the only Premiership team not to have reached the knock-out stage.

Championship sides Falkirk, Dunfermline Athletic and Livingston join them in the second round after winning their groups.

As do Ayr United, who suffered relegation to League One last season but finish the group stage with a 100% record.

Dundee and Dundee United will slug it out in their city derby to decide who goes through as winners.

Peterhead will miss out unless one of those sides lose by at least six goals, so the League Two side's chances have surely gone.

"We showed we came here to try to get a result.

"They threw everything at us at the end, but I thought we had the majority of the play and probably deserved to win."

Dunfermline win the penalty shoot-out after some dismal spot-kicks from their hosts.

But the Pars were already going through as Group B winners and Hearts, the top seeds in the group as the only Premiership team, were already consigned to third.

Ross County win the penalty shoot-out at Gayfield and progress to the knock-out stage as runners-up to Hibs in Group D.

It looks like Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Peterhead, Albion Rovers and Greenock Morton are the four second-placed teams who will not go through.
