  2. O'Halloran back at St Johnstonepublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

St Johnstone aren't in competitive action today, missing out on the League Cup because of their shortlived Europa League campaign, but manager Tommy Wright has looked to bolster his forward options by returning to the past.

Michael O'Halloran, who moved to Rangers from McDiarmid Park in February 2016, has returned to the Perth club on loan until January.

He impressed sufficiently in his first spell there, after signing from Bolton Wanderers, to persuade Rangers to shell out a transfer fee of around £500,000 and O'Halloran will be hoping to recapture that form after a disappointing time at Ibrox.

By the way, Saints did have a friendly against East Fife today, overcoming the League One outfit 2-0.

  3. County and Hibs vie for toppublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

    Group D

Group D is the only section to involve two Premiership sides and Ross County and Hibs have risen to the top as expected.

But Arbroath will be hoping to upset the applecart as they host County, who lead Hibs by a point.

The Red Lichties would lift themselves into second with a win - but only if Alloa Athletic manage their first, and an unlikely, win of the competition at home to Hibs.

  4. Hearts on brinkpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

    Group B

The pressure just seems to keep on piling on Ian Cathro.

Hearts' young head coach managed to ride the criticism of a poor finish to last season, but they host Dunfermline Athletic today two points behind the Championship visitors.

With the Edinburgh side presently the seventh best runners-up, only a win will be enough to prevent them exiting the League Cup.

Indeed, with Peterhead, surprise winners over Hearts in midweek, on the same number of points as the Edinburgh side, even a draw would not be enough to save Cathro some more difficult questions should the Blue Toon win away to League Two rivals Elgin City.

  6. Danger for Premiership sixpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

Six top-flight sides go into today's games in danger of missing out on the second round - Hamilton Academical, Hearts, Hibernian, Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle and Ross County.

In addition, Dundee are second in Group C behind neighbours United going into tomorrow's derby.

However, it highly likely that whoever loses that game is likely to still go through as one of the four best runners-up as they both go into the game with 100% records.

  7. Group dynamicspublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 29 July 2017

It's a big day for many clubs around the country in the Scottish League Cup, with only three of the eight group winners having already been decided.

Four more will book their place in the second round today as table toppers, with Group C not being decided until tomorrow's Tayside derby, when leaders Dundee United travel across the road to face Dundee.

In addition to the eight group winners, the four best runners-up join European representatives Aberdeen, Celtic, Rangers and St Johnstone in the knock-out stage.

The permutations are endless, so get your calculators out.
