Everton warned fans in the build-up to this tie not to wear club colours if they are travelling to Croatia.

Crowd trouble marred the first leg of the play-off at Goodison Park, causing play to be suspended in the 33rd minute, with Uefa opening disciplinary proceedings against both clubs.

Toffees fans have also been advised not to display flags in any public areas.

Supporters have also been advised to congregate at a specially created fan zone in the city and will be given a police escort to the stadium.

"I am sure there will be some atmosphere - it will be a little bit nervy, a little bit edgy and maybe backs-to-the-wall at times," said Toffees centre-back Phil Jagielka.

Thankfully, we've had no reports of any trouble tonight so far.

Sticking with Europe, but shifting slightly to the Champions League, the draw for the group stages was made earlier.

Tottenham were handed a tough old draw, with holders Real Madrid (Gareth Bale and all), German side Borussia Dortmund and Apoel of Cyprus joining them in Group H.

Scottish champions Celtic face a tough test in a group with Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Anderlecht.

Premier League champions Chelsea have been drawn to play Atletico Madrid, Roma and Qarabag in Group C, and Europa League winners Manchester United face Benfica, Basel and CSKA Moscow in Group A.

Manchester City, who finished third in the Premier League last season, are up against Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Feyenoord in Group F, while Liverpool, who beat Hoffenheim in a play-off to secure their place in the draw in Monaco, will meet Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Maribor in Group E.

  3. Elsewhere in Europe...published at 19:42 British Summer Time 24 August 2017

Plenty of other Europa League games on tonight.

Ajax - who reached last season's final - are in danger of heading out in the qualifying phase. They need to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit at Rosenborg tonight (19:45 BST).

AC Milan's passage to the group stages should be safe - unless they blow a 6-0 lead against Shkendija in Macedonia (19:45).

Marseille and Domzale are level at 1-1.

Hajduk Split have won eight of their last nine European home games (including qualifiers), including each of the last five.

But they have lost five of their last six European games against English opposition (drawing the other), failing to score in each defeat.

On home soil, they have won three of their last five European matches (including qualifiers) against English sides, although they lost the last two against Fulham in 2002 and Stoke in 2011.

Wayne Rooney has scored 39 goals in European competitions, although all of these were for Manchester United (a club record total).

Everton have won eight of their last 10 European games (including qualifiers), losing the other two matches.

Wayne Rooney starts, just a day after announcing his retirement from international football. Good news for Everton, that, with the perceived wisdom being that it should extend his club playing career.

Bad news for England, though. If the first two games of this season have shown us anything, it is that a fit, motivated Wazza still has plenty to offer.

And it is not like England are currently awash with red-hot forwards.

I like Defoe and Welbeck, but they've hardly battered down the door for inclusion.

Sigurdsson's inclusion is one of four changes made by Ronald Koeman, with Cuco Martina, Mo Besic and Ademola Lookman also coming in.

The aforementioned Gueye, Mason Holgate, Phil Jagielka and Tom Davies make way.

So there you have it. Notable absentees? Well, summer signings Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez aren't there, but we knew that already. Netherlands midfielder Klaassen has a foot injury, while Spanish striker Sandro has a heel problem and is a doubt for Sunday's Premier League game against Chelsea.

Looks like Idrissa Gueye has been given a rest. Might be a smart move with Morgan Schneiderlin suspended for the next league game.

Yep, the big team news for Everton is a first start for Gylfi Sigurdsson. He'll be on the left of midfield in what (according to a handy graphic the club have tweeted) is a 4-4-2 formation.

The rest of the starting XI is pretty strong as well. We'll have that for you in a second...

OK, so I don't want to completely strip away Everton fans' right to complain about their side. I suppose they could argue they still need another striker. But be honest, life is pretty sweet at Goodison right now.

Tonight they are in Croatia, holding a 2-0 advantage over Hajduk Split in their two-legged Europa League play-off contest.

They introduced £45m signing Gylfi Sigurdsson to fans during the first leg. They'll see him in action in the second.

We football fans are a pessimistic bunch in general, far more comfortable taking a critical stance on our respective team than revelling in its positives. Maybe it's an English thing?

It must be quite difficult and confusing, then, being an Everton fan right now, so deprived are they of things to grumble about.

They're spending big money, they're scoring goals at one end and not conceding many at the other, they've even got their Wayne back.

And in about two hours time they could be in the Europa League proper.
