Terrific stuff by Mat Ryan as the Brighton keeper makes a superb double save to deny United from taking the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Marcus Rashford's cross causes panic inside the Brighton area and Romelu Lukaku's close range header is kept out by Ryan before the stopper uses his legs to deny Paul Pogba.

    That could be crucial.

We just had a rather heavy burst of rain, it could have been sleet I am not entirely sure.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton barely noticed as he remained on the edge of his technical area. Jose Mourinho had retreated to his dug out already.

He is back now - and we have blue sky. The weather is more interesting than the game sadly.

This game has served up very little in terms of excitement but that won't worry Brighton.

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

A quickly taken United free-kick results in Juan Mata delivering a hanging cross towards Romelu Lukaku. It hits the big striker on his back and Mat Ryan gathers.

Not great this from United to be honest.

Chris Hughton will be delighted with how this is going. Brighton arrived at Old Trafford with the sixth best defensive record in the Premier League behind Manchester City, United, Chelsea, Spurs and Burnley.

The visitors have come with a game plan and they are looking comfortable.

Brighton fans singing 'we support our local team' as a skit on Manchester United's global fanbase.

It wasn't always the case though.

After the sale of the old Goldstone Ground, Brighton spent two seasons, from 1997 to 1999, playing in Gillingham, some 70 miles away before returning to the Withdean Stadium, an athletics track.

Anthony Martial takes a tumble inside the Brighton box while surrounded by a number of yellow shirts. He flings his arms in the air as United fans scream for a penalty. Neil Swarbrick is having none of it.

  15. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

This has been a rather subdued start by United. It's pretty quiet inside Old Trafford as home fans wait for something special from their team.

United certainly haven't come flying out of the blocks and Romelu Lukaku's poor early finish remains their only attempt so far.

  16. SAVE!published at 13 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

Brighton have never won at Old Trafford but this has been a confident start by Chris Hughton's men.

Lots on Michael Carrick today after he released a statement last night revealing his long absence was due to an irregular heartbeat.

Thankfully, Carrick is back training normally again. The former England midfielder is not involved today.

He is here though. Sat on his own in the directors' box.

    Manchester United 0-0 Brighton

Brighton are in their yellow away strip and are knocking it about with confidence in the opening exchanges.

It's United, however, who have the first shot in anger. Good link up play between Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku sees the latter lift the ball disappointingly over the bar from the edge of the area.
