The teams are out. Jose Mourinho is in a good mood. How can I tell? He's just shaken hands with United mascot Fred the Red.

Peter Ward is the only Brighton player ever to score a matchwinning goal against Manchester United.

Ward's 83rd-minute effort at the Goldstone Ground gave Brighton their only win in 10 games against the Red Devils, back in 1982.

Ward is rare amongst English players in that he spent more time in the United States than he did in England.

He moved out as a 26-year-old in 1982 - he was back at Brighton on loan when he scored the United goal - and played for nine teams, five of them in indoor football, before retiring in 1997, when he was 42.

  4. Brighton rock shock?published at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

This is a rare old school 3pm Saturday game at Old Trafford - only the second of the season at the venue.

United have been involved in a couple away from home...including one which threw up one of the surprises of the season so far.

Will Brighton do what Huddersfield did and send more shockwaves through the Premier League this afternoon?

Spandau Ballet are riding high at the top of the charts and Aberdeen, managed by a bloke called Alex Ferguson, beat mighty Real Madrid to win the Cup Winners' Cup.

Watford finish runners-up to Liverpool in the title race...and relegated Brighton force a replay against Manchester United in the FA Cup final in front of 99,051 fans at Wembley thanks to Gary Stevens' 87th minute equaliser.

Yet it could have been so much better for the Seagulls.

"And Smith must score..." went the famous BBC radio commentary from Peter Jones in the very last minute of the game as keeper Gary Bailey denied Gordon Smith a dramatic winner.

The replay was much more straight forward for Ron Atkinson's United as Bryan Robson scores twice in a 4-0 win.

Brighton fans have travelled in numbers to the north west for a game few thought would happen not long ago.

Seven years ago the Seagulls were in League One taking on FC United of Manchester in the FA Cup.

Now they're mixing it with the Premier League heavyweights.

  8. 'United need to keep pressure on City'published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

After some midweek Champions League frustrations, Manchester United will be fully aware that normal service will need to be resumed in their continued efforts to keep pace with Manchester City.

There hasn't been any sign of last season's costly home draws as Jose Mourinho's team look to make it eight consecutive league wins at Old Trafford - with neighbours City their next domestic visitors.

Brighton arrive unbeaten in five matches and as a current top-half team after a very steady start.

Their last league meeting against United ended 1-1 at Old Trafford almost 35 years ago. Any kind of repeat would certainly raise some eyebrows.

  11. Will United cut Man City's lead?published at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 25 November 2017

Manchester United have already been left reeling by one newly-promoted side.

Since then the Red Devils have lost at Chelsea and, on Wednesday, Basel in the Champions League.

At the start of a busy week which sees Jose Mourinho's side visit both Watford and Arsenal, United cannot afford any more slips-ups against Brighton and Hove Albion.
