  1. 'Instead of going under, we just got stronger'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 23 September 2017

    FT: Sunderland 1-2 Cardiff City

    Neil WarnockImage source, Rex Features

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock says his side's 2-1 win away at Sunderland was a justified result for the Bluebirds.

Lynden Gooch's penalty had cancelled out Craig Bryson's opener for Cardiff but Joe Ralls secured Warnock's side three points from the penalty spot.

Warnock said: "I thought we deserved it if I'm honest. We had a knockback when they scored the equaliser, which was a silly goal to give away.

"Instead of going under, we just got stronger and we really started playing again and it was just if we could get the goal."

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 72 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forest

And that is Keinan Davis' last involvement in this match. He's replaced by midfielder Josh Onomah.

Is Villa boss Bruce settling for what he has got?

  3. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 71 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forest

The Villa fans want a penalty but the referee isn't interested in the slightest.

It's Villa striker Keinan Davis running towards goal and defender Joe Worrall dangles a leg but there was very little contact, if any.

    A good decision.

  4. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 69 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Forest make their second substitution as Andreas Bouchalakis is replaced by Ben Osborn. I forget to tell you about their first in the commotion of the Villa goal but Mustapha Carayol replaced Barrie McKay.

  5. CLOSE!published at 66 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Big, big chance for Daryl Murphy.

Forest take a short corner and a left-footed cross is swung in from the right. The ball finds it's way all the way to the striker seven yards out in the middle of the goal but he doesn't make the correct connection with his stooping header and the ball goes over.

How Murphy was allowed to bend and head the ball on goal seven yards out, I do not know.

  6. 'Today is Alfred's day'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 23 September 2017

    FT: Wolves 2-1 Barnsley

Nuno Espirito SantoImage source, Rex Features

Wolves got a dramatic late win against Barnsley earlier today.

Alfred N'Diaye scored in stoppage time for Wolves after Tykes defender Adam Jackson cancelled out Bright Enobakhare's opener in added time.

"Today is Alfred's day, tomorrow is another one. This is the squad, we don't only care about the players who are on the pitch," Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo told BBC WM 95.6.

"It shows the character to put the ball in the middle of the pitch and say 'okay, let's go again.'

"Three points like this shows a lot for the character of the team."

  7. Postpublished at 64 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forest

"You're not singing anymore" is the chant followed by "it's all gone quiet over there". This match has been booted into life in the second half.

Once again Nottingham Forest have conceded after a good period of play though. They have all the work to do once again.

  8. goal

GOAL: Aston Villa 2-1 Nottingham Forestpublished at 60 mins

    Conor Hourihane

Steve Bruce won't be furious anymore!

From that foul on Jonathan Kodjia, Conor Hourihane curls in a free-kick into the bottom left corner. It was about 30 yards out. Should the goalkeeper have done better?

  9. Brereton bookedpublished at 59 mins

    Aston Villa 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Jonathan Kodjia gives the Villa defence some respite with a surging run towards the Forest defence.

In the end Ben Brereton has to bring the striker down and as a result picks up a yellow.

Steve Bruce will be furious with how his side have started this half.

  10. CLOSE!published at 57 mins

    Aston Villa 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Daryl Murphy looks a completely different player now. Another dangerous cross comes in and the Republic of Ireland international pulls off his marker to get a header on goal.

It's not his best effort and goes straight at Sam Johnstone, but more reasons for Villa to worry.

  11. CLOSE!published at 55 mins

    Aston Villa 1-1 Nottingham Forest

And now Forest almost take the lead!

They have hardly had a shot all game but that goal has lifted them. Kieran Dowell's shot is deflected right across the face of goal by goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The Villa fans suddenly sound nervous and with good reason.

  12. goal

GOAL: Aston Villa 1-1 Nottingham Forestpublished at 52 mins

    Daryl Murphy

    One shot. One goal.

Daryl Murphy gets his first sight of Sam Johnstone's net and it's a brilliant finish from inside the area into the bottom right corner.

There was none of the pretty build-up from Forest. It's played up quickly towards the striker and the ball bobbled into the box, where Murphy runs on and scores.

Villa have dominated but now this game is back level.

  13. Postpublished at 50 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Nottingham Forest

No clear change to the pattern of play after the break from Forest's point of view. They put together plenty of passes but don't go anywhere and end up losing the ball.

  14. Postpublished at 47 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Nottingham Forest

And here is Liam Bridcutt - cue cheers from the home fans. He sprints to the halfway line and then joins the action two minutes late.

He clearly wasn't injured. What was that?!

If it was for a toilet break as the TV commentators are suggesting, then I give up.

  15. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Nottingham Forest

Now we do get away for the second 45 minutes. No changes for either side but Forest are without Liam Bridcutt.

I have no idea what is going on here.

  16. Postpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 23 September 2017

HT: Aston Villa 1-0 Nottingham Forest

There's a delay to the second half as we wait for Liam Bridcutt.

The Nottingham Forest midfielder made it out onto the pitch and then turned around and ran back down the tunnel.

Just start without him. He's had 15 minutes to get himself ready...

What can Forest do to change this up then?

My suggestion would be go more direct and get Jason Cummings on to support Daryl Murphy but that clearly isn't how Mark Warburton wants to play.

  19. Postpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 23 September 2017

HT: Aston Villa 1-0 Nottingham Forest

Villa manager Steve Bruce marches down the touchline and must be pretty pleased with that.

After weathering an early period of good pressure from Forest, Villa got their goal and have looked by far the more threatening side.

For all their passing, Mark Warburton's side haven't really created anything and have in fact caused themselves more problems by trying to pass out from defence.

  20. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 23 September 2017

    Aston Villa 1-0 Nottingham Forest

Matt Mills gives away another free-kick at the end of what has been a difficult half for the Forest centre-back.

The first ball is just about cleared but that's not the end of the danger as Jonathan Kodjia is fed the ball in the area.

He tries to beat his man but eventually the ball is whacked away from the Forest goal and that's half-time.
