Isco scored twice as a scintillating Spain beat Italy at the Bernabeu to take a huge step towards qualifying for the World Cup from Group G.

The hosts started without a striker, but did not need one with the Real Madrid playmaker curling home a free-kick and then smashing in a second.

Alvaro Morata came on to add a third from Sergio Ramos' cross.

Italy, who trail Spain by three points with a much worse goal difference, are likely to be in the play-offs.

    Spain 3-0 Italy

A very popular substitute both ways. Two-goal Isco comes off - at his club's home ground, and David Villa comes on for his 98th cap - his first since 2013-14 when he left for New York City.

  7. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 89 mins

Spain think they've got a fourth goal but Alvaro Morata was well offside from David Silva's pass.

David de Gea is able to hold onto a Lorenzo Insigne shot from distance as Italy have a rare effort on target.

  10. Postpublished at 82 mins

Sergio Ramos, now out on the left for some reason, volleys a shot wide after it lands to him in the box. Both he and Gerard Pique were up in the Italy box. Mavericks.

  11. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 80 mins

    Spain 3-0 Italy

Italy make a change now as Manolo Gabbiadini replaces Ciro Immobile.

David Villa gets a fantastic reception as he warms up for Spain. Not sure if he's coming on though.

Spain make a change, with the game already won. Marco Asensio - who was actually pretty quiet - is replaced by Saul Niguez.

  13. goal

GOAL - Spain 3-0 Italypublished at 77 mins

    Alvaro Morata

Alvaro Morata has only been on the pitch for a few minutes and he seals the game - and probably Spain's World Cup place. Sergio Ramos charges forward down the right (remember he's a veteran centre-back and it's late in this game) and his perfect cross is slammed home by Chelsea striker Morata from close range.

    Spain 2-0 Italy

This game has made up for that Georgia v Republic of Ireland dross I had to watch earlier. If more qualifiers were like this, people would object to international breaks less.

  15. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 76 mins

    Spain 2-0 Italy

Ciro Immobile runs back from an offside position - ie miles offside - the ball lands to him and he thinks 'better kick the ball into the empty net just in case it counts'. It didn't.

  16. Postpublished at 75 mins

    Spain 2-0 Italy

Federico Bernardeschi crosses but Spain clear. The hosts break and Alvaro Morata is only denied a run in goal by a good Andrea Barzagli tackle - his former Juventus team-mate.

Sho Rahman: Remember a couple of years ago when Isco could barely get on the Madrid bench. The turnaround is sensational.

Dave Wood: Wonder if PSG will meet Iscos €700m buyout clause in January?

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 72 mins

    Spain 2-0 Italy

Spain scored twice with no proper striker. Well they have one now. Chelsea's Alvaro Morata replaces Andres Iniesta. Iniesta gets a fantastic reception as he comes off. In contract to Barcelona team-mate Gerard Pique every time he gets the ball. I guess scoring a winner in a World Cup final will do that.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 70 mins

    Spain 2-0 Italy

On comes 40m euros winger Federico Bernardeschi, who has yet to make his Serie A debut for Juventus following his summer move from Fiorentina. He replaces Andrea Belotti, who only had nine touches of the ball.

It's a double change, as Eder replaces Antonio Candreva.

  20. Postpublished at 69 mins

    Spain 2-0 Italy

Brilliant from Spain, who almost put this game to bed. Isco, in sensational form tonight, nutmegs an Italian midfielder and plays an excellent ball through to Dani Carvajal. Only a good stop by Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon denies him a goal.
