More good keeping from Leandro Chichizola. Luis Suarez plays through his unrelated namesake Denis Suarez. Chichizola comes off his line and forces Denis wide and the chance is gone.

Lionel Messi lines-up a free-kick 25 yards out, it's flying into the top corner but a fantastic stop by Leandro Chichizola keeps it out.

Luis Suarez tries to score the rebound but the Argentine keeper completes another save.

One particularly notable aspect of being at an behind-closed-doors game is being able to clearly hear the shouts and screams from the players, whose cries are usually of course rendered inaudible by the noise of the fans.

For such a small chap, Jordi Alba seems to have a surprisingly loud voice. Paulinho is deep and commanding, and Javier Mascherano likes a chat. Lionel Messi, though, seems to be a man of few words.

    Barcelona 0-0 Las Palmas

It sounds like Barcelona were told they would lose points if they refused to play today.

The Catalan club have won the first six games of the La Liga season to date. Can they make it seven from seven? It's been a quiet start - on and off the pitch.

I and other journalists have been relocated from our lower tier seats to our usual position in the press box by an apologetic official. Apparently nobody is allowed in the stands - stewards and hospitality staff who were watching have also been moved.

    Barcelona 0-0 Las Palmas

Lionel Messi plays in Luis Suarez but the Uruguayan shoots straight at the keeper. He was flagged offside anyway.

You can hear every player kick the ball. So bizarre.

Lionel Messi finds Jordi Alba, whose attempted pass back to the Barca star is intercepted by Alberto Aquilani.

    Yes, that Alberto Aquilani.

  8. Messi moves into top threepublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 1 October 2017

    Barcelona 0-0 Las Palmas

Lionel Messi moves into third place on the list of all-time Barcelona appearances - with 594. He was joint with Carles Puyol on 593.

The record is Xavi on 767, with Andres Iniesta on 638 (639 if he comes off the bench today). That's the club's last three captains and the current vice-captain, Messi.

"For Messi to surpass Puyol in appearances goes to show what a capacity he has for pulverising records like this," said boss Ernesto Valverde earlier this week. "He’s reached this number at the age of 30 while Puyol was 36, and that’s quite spectacular.”

    Barcelona 0-0 Las Palmas

Las Palmas, who are only outside the relegation zone on goal difference, have a shot but Borja Herrera's long-range effort is wide.

Now Sergi Roberto has a shot saved for Barcelona.

Which team will be able to handle this lack of atmosphere better?

Strange, strange, strange... Barca's players walk into an empty stadium to the sound of the famous club anthem, which the PA team have decided to play anyway even though only a few people are inside to hear it.

Barcelona's players have taken off those away shirts now and are wearing their usual kit. Cordial relations between the captains.

We can here everything they and the referees are saying, because there is no crowd noise. Surreal.

Barcelona's players appear to be wearing their away shirts - which are in the colour of the Catalan flag (red and yellow).

Sitting inside the stadium now it's disconcerting to hear the whistles and jeers of fans who have been waiting patiently to be let inside.

Now, 10 minutes before kick off, they are finally being told the game is behind closed doors. Hopefully they can be dispersed safely but there's bound to be a lot of anger among people who paid good money for tickets.

A lot of people in Barcelona think this game should not have gone ahead.

    Andy West

This is a surreal experience, with the players going through their usual warm-up routines in front of nobody but ball boys, redundant stewards and hospitality staff and the media.

Like many other journalists, I have taken advantage of the empty seats to take a place at the front of the second tier, much lower down than our usual press box seats.

When the game starts, there will be a strong temptation to head down to the very front rows and start yelling tactical instructions to Lionel Messi.
