UK Phooey: We're not asking to win a tournament, just to qualify for one. Hard to believe this seems impossible. I was at the 1998 World Cup and it's astonishing that this was the last time Scotland qualified for a tournament.
EF: Scotland just lost their best manager. The SFA should all resign and let new people take charge.
Donnie McKenzie: Let's be blunt, Gordon was not the reason we have not qualified for the World Cup. It's the clowns at the top.

Alex McLeish is a popular candidate with the bookmakers to return to the Hampden hot seat for a second time.
His first stint in charge of Scotland saw him take charge of just 10 games, but it produced seven wins, including the James McFadden-inspired triumph over France in Paris in 2007.
The former Rangers boss went on to win the League Cup with Birmingham, but subsequent spells in charge at Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Belgian outfit Genk have not been quite so fruitful.

He may have ruled out the Scotland job for now but it could be something that appeals to the 46-year-old former Celtic and Bolton manager in the future.
"Maybe but it just doesn't float my boat. Gareth Southgate has gone in there but he has come through the system at England and he had to bide his time.
"You look at the experience Martin O'Neill has and again he was being pilloried by lots of people in Ireland for performances. It's all about results and when it comes down to it he got a result against Wales."

The easiest thing would be to say yes [Strachan deserved to go], because they’ve failed again to get to the finals, but it’s getting on 20 years, we’ve had managers such as Walter Smith, Alex McLeish, Gordon and others, and no-one’s managed to get Scotland to finals.
You get the feeling after a while that it might not be the manager. That’s my concern, but the decision’s made.

Neil Lennon has ruled out any thoughts of becoming the new Scotland manager. Speaking prior to the SFA announcement of the departure of Gordon Strachan, the Hibernian manager says international management is not on his immediate radar.
"Not really, not at the minute. I get surprised when I see younger managers taking it [international management] on. Mark Hughes went straight into it and Slaven Bilic did it with Croatia.
"I just think the gap between the games is huge."

Will Scotland get anyone as good as Gordon Strachan? Maybe. Will they get anyone better? I would doubt it. The very best ones aren’t going to take that job.
If it was my choice I would go straight for David Moyes right now, however I’m not convinced that in Scotland he is seen in that light at the moment because of the difficulties he’s had in his last two jobs.
His star has slightly fallen and if you ask people in Scotland, a lot of people say he wouldn’t be their first choice. He would be mine.

Scotland skipper Scott Brown, who missed the final two qualifiers through injury, has had his say on Gordon Strachan's departure.
Brown posted the picture below with the message: "Sad sad sad day. We all had faith in Gordon and believed in making the Euros. 14 points out of 18 in 2017 - momentum was on our side."

Will Scotland turn to Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill?
The former Dundee United and Hibernian winger has performed wonders in charge of his native Northern Ireland, leading them to the last 16 at Euro 2016 and now to the play-offs for a place in Russia.
Despite having a limited talent pool to work with, his team comfortably beat both the Czech Republic and Norway to finish as runners-up to Germany in their qualifying group.
O'Neill still lives in Edinburgh, so his familiarity with the Scottish football landscape should make any potential switch a smooth one. But any move would surely depend on his current side coming up short in next month's play-offs.

The players loved Gordon Strachan, the media tolerated him and the fans were split down the middle but ultimately the results dictated he couldn’t carry on.
Yes, performances improved but ultimately it was two campaigns and two failures. There was only ever going to be one outcome.

There will be disagreements about the decision but few would argue that the news came as much of a shock.
The SFA could not be seen to be rewarding failure and as the players trudged off the pitch in Ljubljana, it felt like the end, not only for their World Cup chances, but for the manager.
He had come close to walking away in the past and the speed of today’s decision was most likely aided by a reluctance from the man himself to carry on.
