    Liverpool 3-0 Maribor

Liverpool also moved closer towards the Champions League knockout stages for the first time since 2008-09 with a 3-0 victory over Maribor.

Mohamed Salah, Emre Can and Daniel Sturridge were on the scoresheet for the Reds, who are top of Group E with eight points from their four games so far.

The only negative from the evening was Georginio Wijnaldum's injury.

The midfielder needs a scan on his ankle and is doubtful for Saturday's Premier League trip to West Ham.

  5. 'Everyone around Europe will have seen'published at 09:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2017

    Tottenham 3-1 Real Madrid

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was unsurprisingly in jubilant mood after the thrilling win over Real Madrid but admitted that trophies had to be won to back up their impressive form.

"It's something that everyone around Europe will have seen," the Argentine said. "Tottenham is a big team; we're playing at Wembley in front of 80,000 people and these are really historic occasions.

"We now belong in and among the best, not only in England but in Europe, and results like this help people to see that this is where we are going.

"Right now, we're very proud. But this means nothing if at the end of the season we haven't won a trophy."

  7. 'We came up against a better team'published at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2017

    Tottenham 3-1 Real Madrid

The 3-1 defeat against Tottenham at Wembley was Real Madrid's first in the group stages since 2012, their heaviest defeat in the tournament since the 4-1 reverse at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the 2013 semi-final.

Coach Zinedine Zidane's team are now three points behind leaders Spurs in Group H but he insisted: "I'm not worried. Ultimately we came up against a better team who put in a better performance on the night.

"That's something that we have to accept. It wasn't that we played badly, we had chances to draw level at 1-0 down but, as is happening recently, things just didn't go our way and the ball just didn't go in."

    Napoli 2-4 Manchester City

It was also a huge night for Manchester City in Europe and, more specifically, Sergio Aguero.

The Argentina international's goal against Napoli on Wednesday saw him surpass Eric Brook's total of 177 goals in all competitions for City and become his club's top scorer with 178.

Aguero has only taken 264 games to achieve the feat.

Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones and Raheem Sterling were also on the scoresheet for City as they beat the Serie A leaders to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Napoli, whose goals came from Lorenzo Insigne and Jorginho's penalty, are now in danger of not qualifying to the knockout stages.
