Millwall extended their unbeaten run to three Championship games as they beat Middlesbrough at The Den, increasing the pressure on Garry Monk as his side fell below Ipswich and Preston to 10th.

Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk told BBC Tees: "It's a very direct game, very physical, very straightforward in terms of what you need to do well and at the risk of repeating myself it's schoolboy errors again.

"I feel like a broken record at this moment in time - we prepared all week exactly for what was expected and naive errors cost us the goals and we didn't do enough to recover.

"There were a few situations where we got out-muscled, bullied in those situations too many times."

Sol Bamba has developed a reputation at Cardiff City for only scoring important goals and he appears to have done it again.

It was hard to see where the breakthrough would come from, but Bamba's pinpoint header is huge for Cardiff.

Hull fans, of course, will point to an offside flag that maybe should have come, but didn't....

In-form Derby boosted their promotion hopes with a win over play-off rivals Aston Villa, who remain fifth but are now winless in three games and just one point clear of seventh-placed Leeds.

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce told BBC WM: "Mistakes were what cost us the match really and we're always chasing from the first minute - the number of times we've surrendered possession and unfortunately in a big game you can't make mistakes like that because they cost you.

"Overall, in a big game, we can't make the elementary mistakes we made today."

Clinical finishing proved the difference as Ipswich Town ended Reading's five-match unbeaten run, with the Royals losing pace with the play-off contenders.

Reading boss Jaap Stam told BBC Radio Berkshire: "We need to look at ourselves in what we need to do better, and you don't want to use it as an excuse but the referee was very bad.

"The decisions that went against us were not right for us on many occasions.

"We don't have a Christmas feeling, I can tell you that - at least I haven't, because it's just like any other week."

Jordan Hugill scored the only goal of the game as Preston beat promotion-chasing Sheffield United, who have now lost three successive games to slip away from the automatic promotion places.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: "They thoroughly deserved to win it - they did the basics right and we didn't do enough as a team that represents me and this football club.

"We have to find a way - we're in a little bit of a hole and we need to get out of it.

"I need to get into the players, which I will do, and we need to find an answer because we're not used to this and we're not enjoying it."

    Jack RobinsonImage source, Rex Features

Defender Jack Robinson scored twice - his first goals in senior football - as QPR picked up their first away win in 18 attempts, dating back to February, to leave Birmingham bottom of the Championship table.

Birmingham City manager Steve Cotterill told BBC WM: "We've put enough attacking players out on the pitch since I've been here to have won more games than we've won.

"But when their confidence is low and they're nervous on the ball that's what you get.

"If something goes wrong for us on a Saturday the anxiety creeps in and that's where they are right now."
