So that draw brings our Saturday EFL coverage to an end on a thrilling day of football, which saw Wolves extend their lead at the top, Bolton shock Cardiff and Burton get an impressive win at Reading.

Aston Villa and Sheffield United share the spoils, frustratingly so for the Blades who see Yorkshire rivals Leeds leapfrog them into the play-off places.

Thanks so much for joining us today, it's been a delight to have your company.

We'll be back on Boxing Day, fresh from a day of quaffing, troughing and unwrapping.

All that is left to be said is, have a wonderful Christmas wherever you are.

  2. Reaction - Donaldson on 'stopping the rot'published at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 23 December 2017

FT: Aston Villa 2-2 Sheff Utd

Sheffield United goalscorer Clayton Donaldson tells Sky Sports:

"Hopefully we've stopped the rot a little bit and can start looking upwards.

"We didn't start well today but we kept on going.

"After we got back in to the game, we felt we could get something out of it.

"As a former Birmingham player I get a little bit of stick from these fans. I kinda shut them up a bit."

After a first half that was Fast and the Furious, the second was more Herbie.

Villa raced into a 2-0 lead on nine minutes thanks to goals from Albert Adomah and Mile Jedinak.

With the same amount of time of game almost it was level, ex-Birmingham striker Clayton Donaldson grabbing two goals on a ground where he copped plenty of flak.

No score in a second half that failed to match the one before it.

    Points shared. Fair result.

Scott Hogan gets in behind Sheffield United and tries to drill it across but it was a daisy cutter at best.

United have a chance through Leon Clarke, whose effort goes wide. Blades fans give a gasp. Villa fans take the mickey.

    Four added minutes.

That free-kick from Sheffield United was the epitome of a damp squib.

    Drivel.

Sheffield United have another set-piece. Again to no avail.

I think the fans are pretty desperate for this to end. There's tea to be scoffed. Beers to be guzzled.

Sheffield United deploying their blanket defence method to keep Aston Villa at bay.

It's working, but the problem is when they get the ball there's no-one forward to keep the ball away from their goal.

Villa keep pouring forward. Ah, Billy Sharp holds it up and draws a foul from Villa defender Mile Jedinak.

    A chance for the visitors.

Games are much more exciting when players are making a hash of things aren't they?

Managers hate it, analysts no doubt hate it. But fans, well, there's a reason Danny Baker's Own Goals and Gaffes is such a good watch.

Seven to go. Bring back the cock-ups here. I want some excitement.

After their emphatic 7-0 win at Oxford, League One leaders Wigan's boss Paul Cook tells BBC Radio Manchester:

"Everything has gone our way today. It was our day. The players deserve a massive pat on the back.

"We've all been at the opposite end of that so we have to be respectful to Oxford. I certainly wish them well for the future."

Conor Hourihane and Jack Grealish are trying to probe and prompt for a winner for Villa.

However, Sheffield United have reset nicely, they're defensively solid in the second half.

They're struggling to make headway with the ball though. Villa the more likely to score, but I fancy the draw here.

    Quite amusing that.

John Lundstram wins the second ball as Villa clear the free-kick and pushes it wide to Sheffield United team-mate George Baldock on the right side.

He chases it to the byline and just as he tried to keep it in play, he was 'tackled' by the corner flag and the ball went out for a goal-kick.

Super defending by Villa's 12th man.

Funny old game isn't it? This game has deteriorated a bit in terms of excitement and genuine quality.

Mind you we've had a load of substitutions so maybe that will freshen things a little?

Wicked free kick causes problems and wins Villa a corner. Then there's panic again from the set-piece. Ball cleared and a foul given.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Agbonlahor - remember him? - comes on for Keinan Davis and big money forward Scott Hogan replaces Ahmed Elmohamady.

Mark Duffy comes off and Samir Carruthers is on for the Blades - ex-Villa lad - while Billy Sharp replaces two goal hero Clayton Donaldson.

Conor Hourihane curls a ball in with some pace into the six-yard box but Simon Moore in the Sheffield United goal is equal to it.

    Blades clear. Villa come again.

Superb delivery from Ahmed Elmohamady for Aston Villa was begging for someone to attack but no one did and it sailed through harmlessly.

Sheffield United have a go down the left with Mark Duffy but Villa swarm and regain possession.

I feel Villa are the team making the moves right now...

Chris Basham is extremely close to a second booking there after he thought about dragging back the advancing Jack Grealish. Boos and jeers from the Villa fans to referee Simon Hooper.

Free kick headed tamely at Simon Moore. Still 2-2.
