John McEnerney: Another Ballon d’Or for CR7. Why Iniesta hasn’t won this at least twice is beyond me it’s criminal in fact, the same goes for the great Xavi. Two all time greats without them FCB & Messi wouldn’t have had half the success over the last 10-15 years.

  2. 'Neymar has pressure to deliver Champions League to PSG'published at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    NeymarImage source, AFP

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar is the reference point for Brazilian football since 2011, and the man who could be Brazil's first Ballon d'Or winner since Kaka in 2007.

The 25-year-old is the national team's leader, and the world's most expensive player.

At the 2014 World Cup, he was the player Brazil pinned all their hopes on - and the world saw the collapse when he was out of the team.

He is more complete now. But he has a massive challenge after joining PSG because he was bought to deliver the Champions League - and if he doesn't, it will inevitably be seen as a failure.

Manchester City playmaker Kevin de Bruyne and Chelsea counterpart Eden Hazard stand out as the obvious Premier League candidates to challenge the natural order of the Ballon d'Or when the era of Messi and Ronaldo comes to a close.

City striker Gabriel Jesus, at just 20, may also emerge as a potential winner while, across the city at Old Trafford, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, 24, also has the world at his feet.

The Tottenham duo of striker Harry Kane, 24, and midfielder Dele Alli, 21, will also surely establish themselves among Europe's elite while Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho, 25, is one of world football's most coveted players.

And if we are looking for a rising star who may come into future reckoning for the Ballon d'Or, what about Liverpool's Mo Salah? He is still only 25 and has been a sensation since his £34.5m summer move from Roma.

  7. Owen - the last Briton to win the Ballon d'Orpublished at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

Englishmen have won it five times - Sir Stanley Matthews (1956) Sir Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978 & 79), Michael Owen (2001).

And did you know that David Beckham came second in 1999?

...during a time when a footballer advertising underwear was as ridiculous an idea as Ronald Reagan opting for a political career, a magazine called France Football decided to introduce a new annual award for European footballers - Ballon d'Or.

The first winner was Blackpool and England's Stanley Matthews, who had helped the Tangerines finish second in the top flight.

Matthews beat beating Real Madrid legends Alfredo Di Stefano and Raymond Kopa to the 1956 title.

  9. Countdown to the Ballon d'Or number one!!published at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2017

    Joint 29th to 25th

    Philippe CoutinhoImage source, PA

So, on to the countdown to number one. This feels like the TOTP Christmas Special...

It's a 30-man shortlist (Harry Kane was the only English player present) so let's see how the 173 journalists made their picks:

There's no number 30, so in joint 29th it's Napoli's Dries Mertens and Liverpool midfielder (for how long?) Philippe Coutinho.

At 28 it's Roma's aerial attack king Edin Dzeko.

Coming in at 27 it's dependable Bayern Munich and Germany defender Mats Hummels.

And at 26 it's Atletico Madrid keeper Jan "set for the Europa League" Oblak.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is in 25th position.

If there's one thing about the Ballon d'Or in recent times is that it's been hard to predict.

I'm being slightly facétieux - the fact this pair have dominated for the best part of a decade highlights what an extraordinary period we have lived in.

I say, enjoy it while it lasts.

Before the announcement of the winner of the 2017 award, we will celebrate the Ballon d'Or by looking back at past winners, look forward to which players might be future winners and count down from 30 to number two.
