    Al Jazira 1-0 Real Madrid

The winners of this semi-final will play Brazilian side Gremio in Sunday's final.

Gremio overcame Mexican side Pachuca in the other semi thanks to a fabulous goal in extra time from striker Everton.

Pachuca, incidentally, is famous for having links with Cornwall and they actually serve Cornish pasties in the city. I can personally vouch for their taste and quality.

They will need to get back in the game in the second half, but Real Madrid are bidding to win their third Club World Cup title and lift the trophy for a second consecutive time.

The La Liga champions won the tournament in 2014 and 2016. Only rivals Barcelona (2009, 2011 and 2015) have won it more than Real.

Manchester United are the only English side to win the tournament when they beat Ecuadorian side LDU Quito in 2008. Liverpool (2005) and Chelsea (2012) have both lost in the final.

You might have spotted a familiar face in the Al Jazira dugout in the form of head coach Henk ten Cate.

The erudite Dutchman was Chelsea assistant manager to Avram Grant from October 2007 to May 2008.

Since he left Stamford Bridge his managerial career has taken in some interesting sights. He has had spells at Panathinaikos (Greece), Al-Ahli Dubai (UAE), Umm Salal (Qatar), Shandong Luneng Taishan (China) and was caretaker boss at Sparta Rotterdam (Holland).

The 63-year-old has been in charge of Al Jazira since January.

  5. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:49 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2017

    Al Jazira 1-0 Real Madrid

Well, nobody was expecting this scoreline at half-time. There's still a long way to go of course but Al Jazira's players must be starting to dream about what would surely be the greatest result in the club's history.

Of course Romarinho deserves the credit for a superbly taken goal, but what about Ali Khasif? The goalkeeper has actually been struggling with an injury for most of the first half which makes his heroics even more remarkable.

Al Jazira's reserve goalkeeper has been warming up for most of the half with Manuel Almunia, the former Arsenal and Watford shotstopper who is the club's goalkeeping coach, so it remains to be seen if Khasif emerges for the second half.

    Romarinho

Wow. Well well well. Could we be on for a shock here?

A lapse of concentration in the Real Madrid defence has the them on the back foot and Romarinho makes them pay.

The Brazilian striker latches on to a clever pass from Morocco winger Mbark Boussoufa, cuts back on to his left foot and curls the ball past Keylor Navas in the Real Madrid goal. A superb finish.

    Al Jazira 0-0 Real Madrid

There is a huge gulf in class between the teams here. Real are pinging the ball about with ease. Surely only a matter of time until even Ali Khasif's brilliance in the Al Jazira goal is overcome?

  8. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 30 min

A slightly surreal turn of events as Casemiro heads in at the back post from Isco's cross. But Al Jazira's players feel there is a foul and the goal has been put under review. The referee consults the video footage and decides to disallow it.

Real Madrid's players were quit sheepish with their celebrations, so perhaps the right call.

Real Madrid get the ball in the net and find a way past Ali Khasif when Karim Benzema heads in at the back post, but the referee had spotted a foul by Cristiano Ronaldo on Mohammed Ali Ayed and it is chalked off.

This is turning into the Ali Khasif show. First he dives full length to get fingertips on a Luka Modric's shot and push it past the post. The goalkeeper is then perfectly stationed to gather a powerful Cristiano Ronaldo header from the resulting corner.

Al Jazira then hit on the counter attack but Ali Mabkhout, star of the UAE national team, drags his shot wide from a good position.

  11. GREAT SAVE!published at 16 min

    Al Jazira 0-0 Real Madrid

No matter how many goals Real Madrid end up scoring here (and it could be plenty) an early shout for the man-of-the-match award is Al Jazira Ali Khasif.

The goalkeeper this time makes another superb save, this time diving one-handed to push away an shot from Karim Benzema.

A rare foray forward from Al Jazira but the move peters out and Real Madrid are back to confidently stroking the ball about the pitch.

Al Jazira goalkeeper Ali Khasif, having made a couple of brilliant saves, is now receiving attention from the physio for a problem with his knee.

Real Madrid swing a corner into the box and the delivery is met by the head of Cristiano Ronaldo who brings a brilliant reaction save from Ali Khasif.

Moments later the Al Jazira goalkeeper makes a fine diving save to deny midfielder Luka Modric. It only seems like a matter of time until Real open the scoring.

    Al Jazira 0-0 Real Madrid

Unsurprisingly Real Madrid dominating the early possession in front of a capacity crowd. Al Jazira will try to keep this tight for as long as possible.

Cristiano Ronaldo's first meaningful touch sees the Portugal winger strike a half-volley over the crossbar from about 30 yards. An early sighter.
