A long day, a long year draws to a close with Celtic where they began it on top of the Premiership table.

But city rivals Rangers will take heart from holding Brendan Rodgers' side to a goal-less draw in the final game before the three-week winter break and the opening of the January transfer window.

The Ibrox side, under Graeme Murty, lie third, three points adrift of an Aberdeen side who missed a chance to narrow the eight-point gap at the top after being held by a Hearts side who have now gone six games without conceding a goal.

Kilmarnock are the other form team in the top flight and move above St Johnstone into sixth place after their draw away to Hibs.

Partick Thistle are the day's other movers, leapfrogging Ross County and off the bottom of the table after a 2-0 win over the Dingwall side.

It was a day of ups and downs for Falkirk in the Championship.

BBC Scotland revealed earlier than assistant Jimmy Nicholl is leaving to take up the same post with Rangers.

They then recorded their first win under manager Paul Hartley.

The 3-2 win over Queen of the South moves the Bairns to within five points of third bottom Dumbarton with a game in hand.

It also takes them 11 points clear of Brechin, who missed a chance to record their first league win of the season after Inverness Caledonian Thistle had Carl Tremarco sent off.

Caley Thistle came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 and move to within three points of sixth-top Queens, who themselves missed a chance to draw level with third-top Livingston.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright thought the red card shown to Richard Foster was harsh and ultimately cost his side against Dundee.

"We are down to 10 men with about 70 minutes to go and 1-0 down at the time," he said.

"I thought we responded well to to the goal and created a few opportunities, just that final ball in the first half and didn’t work the keeper enough.

"I thought second half we were outstanding, we should have got something from the game, even with 10 men I thought we were the better side.”

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke was happy enough after his side extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a 1-1 draw at Hibs and moved above St Johnstone on goal difference into sixth place.

"I think we will take the point," he told BBC Scotland. "It was a tough game for us. If you can ever score a goal too early, I think that was the one."

Clarke praised the response of goalkeeper Jamie McDonald, whose error gifted Hibs' Oli Shaw the equaliser.

“He is a goalkeeper and understands the life of a goalkeeper," Clarke added. "He understands that, if you make a mistake like that you are going to get the spotlight on you.

"The good thing for me was he recovered really well from the mistake because, after that, there were a lot of crosses whipped in under the crossbar.”

Ross County manager Owen Coyle: "The first 45 minutes I felt we were very comfortable and obviously we've made a horrendous mistake.

"My disappointment is the reaction in the second half. We huffed and puffed without any real penetration or goalscoring chances.

"There's no doubt there's a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we knew that when we came in.

"If that means adding a few players to the squad and hopefully adding quality then that's what we'll look to do."

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson, speaking to BBC Scotland: “We know what we’re missing – we created a lot of chances.

"When you’re on top as much as we were in the first half, you have to take your chances.

“Second-half was really poor, make no mistake about it, we were poor.

"They took their chances and that’s the difference in football.

"I’m desperate to get some fresh blood in because, ultimately, strikers win you football matches.

"We need to make sure we get busy in the transfer window."

Dundee manager Neil McCann was relieved to overcome 10-man St Johnstone.

"It is a wonderful way to end the year," he told BBC Scotland.

“I think we have improved a lot. We’ll now look to have a real good break for the boys.

"I’ve told them to go away and make sure they are relaxing for the next week anyway and just turn the engines down.

"But it’s a good place to come back and start again off the back of a good win.”

The shock of the day was in League One, where leaders Ayr United squandered a two-goal lead to lose at home to bottom side Forfar Athletic.

The Loons scored three times in the last 15 minutes but remain a point behind Queen's Park.

Ayr's defeat allowed Raith Rovers to move within two points of the Honest Men with two games in hand after their 3-0 win over Stranraer.

Thistle secured a priceless victory today - their fourth in their last five home games - to move off the bottom of the Premiership, leaving vanquished opponents County in that position, three points adrift, heading into the winter break.

Thistle manager Alan Archibald told BBC Scotland: "It was a very scrappy first half, there was not a lot in it and it was a mistake which led to our goal.

"Kris [Doolan] took it really welI, but I expect him to score with the quality he has.

"Conor [Sammon] is a terrific professional and is always ready to go, whether he is starting or coming off the bench.

"He was a real handful and had a number of opportunities to score, but credit to [County keeper] Scott Fox for a fantastic save.

"But Conor got his reward in the end for an outstanding performance.

"[Moving off the bottom] certainly helps going into the break with a bit of positivity. Hopefully we will come out of it with three or four players back from injury.

"The bottom of the table is very tight and we need to be ready to go after the break."

Victory of the day was arguably at Links Park, where Peterhead hammered League Two leaders Montrose 6-2.

The Blue Toon, who remain second in the table, have not only reduced the gap at the top to three points with two games in hand but become the first side in the SPFL to score half a dozen away from home this season.

For once, Rory McAllister was overshadowed in the goalscoring stakes.

The veteran striker scored his side's sixth goal, but it was 21-year-old Jason Brown's early double that set them on their way to a fine victory.

Hibernian assistant coach Gary Parker has been speaking to BBC Scotland, with head coach Neil Lennon still speaking to his players after their 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock.

"That was very frustrating," he said. "We had a few chances, especially in the first half; Danny Swanson had a couple.

"We gave away a goal early doors, which was sloppy from our point of view, and managed to get one back.

"But we just couldn't break them down. They sat in and we tried and tried and tried, but we just couldn't get the winning goal.

"We really should have had enough to break them down and get the three points, which is disappointing."

Parker confirmed that Hibs hope to bring in "one or two" new players in January.

BBC Scotland understands they are closing in on a deal for Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain, who has not featured since a 3-1 home defeat by Hamilton in October, after a falling-out with manager Neil McCann.

Hamilton manager Martin Canning played down the post-match ruckus, but it appears that referee Andrew Dallas didn't see it that way.

Motherwell defender Peter Hartley has apparently been sent off after the game for his involvement.

Hearts manager Craig Levein thought striker Kyle Lafferty did not deserve to be shown a red card late in the second half.

"I thought it was harsh," he said. "There were a lot of tackles in the game.

"Kyle was in a recovering position, chasing back and he's a fraction way from getting the ball.

"The referee said he went in with excessive force, but it wasn't any more forceful than other tackles in the game. I feel sorry for him."

Levein said he would be hoping to extend goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin's contract beyond the summer.

"I'll talk to Jon when he comes back from the break, but we've already spoken about it," he said.

"He made three really good saves, but the defending in general was excellent."

Hearts manager Craig Levein was delighted to create a club record of six consecutive clean sheets.

"I wish we were saying it was six victories, but all credit to the players," he told BBC Scotland.

"We had huge problems going into the game and coming up to Aberdeen is never easy.

"The game-plan was to let them have possession in their own half, defend deep and hopefully hit them on the counter attack.

"Other than not taking the good chances that we made, the plan worked perfectly, to the players’ credit.

"We’ve had four really good opportunities to score and it’s not often you come to Aberdeen and get chances like that.

"Overall, they worked their socks off and did everything they could to win the game.

"I said to the players afterwards that their names will go down in history, so they all need a huge amount of credit for that."

Hamilton Academical manager Martin Canning described it as a "fantastic win" against Motherwell.

"I thought the first 10 minutes, we did not start well and Motherwell scored," he told BBC Scotland.

"But I thought we showed great endeavour and character and I thought we were the better team in both halves.

"Any three points is great in a derby game and I thought we thoroughly deserved it."

Canning played down an incident at the end of the game involving both sets of players, suggesting it was just the kind of exchange of views you would expect after a derby game.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers says the winter break has come just in time for his exhausted squad.
