It feels a bit harsh on most saints fans to want Pellegrino out so early. Yes his tactics don’t seem to be paying off, but he has a bunch of players who don’t seem to putting the effort in. Tadic for one shouldn’t be anywhere near the premiership and Davis, who is usually excellent, has been woeful for the last couple of months. Maybe he’s a bit tactically naive but if this Van Dijk money is invested properly Saints could have a good end to the season.

Man United v Derby (Fri, 20:00 GMT)

Jose Mourinho was totally relaxed as he walked into his press conference at Manchester United's Carrington training complex this afternoon.

He was seen laughing and joking with United staff members afterwards.

In between, he got a few things off his chest.

Taking a leaf out of Donald Trump's way of addressing 'fake' news, he regards reports he is about to walk out of Old Trafford as 'garbage'.

He was bristling at suggestions he is being less than professional about how he is doing his job and that he is unhappy, saying he wants to stay at United beyond the remaining 18 months of his contract.

Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku are fit for Friday's FA Cup third round tie with Derby.

And who did he mean when he said this in response to being asked if he still had the hunger for the job?

"Because I don't behave as a clown on the touchline? It means I lost my passion? I prefer to do the way I do it, much more mature, better for my team and myself, you don't have to behave like a crazy guy on the touchline."

30 years ago Liverpool were playing attractive football and winning everything. Some United fans at the time tried to hound out Sir Alex Ferguson because they didn’t like his style of play and the fact we weren’t getting the result they wanted - Imagine if they had got their way ! United fans need perspective - we are competing with City who are probably the most complete team anyone has seen for years. Mourinho needs time and the backing of the fans.

  4. Tarkowski commits to the Claretspublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

Burnley defender James Tarkowski has signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

His new contract runs until 2022 and replaces his existing deal which was due to expire at the end of next season.

Tarkowski played in Burnley's first 18 games of the season before picking up a retrospective three-match ban and sustaining a broken hand in the Clarets’ 0-0 draw at Brighton.

We asked to hear from fans happy with their managers and you haven't let us down.....

Yousuf Ali: Extremely happy with Signor Conte but given that the club hasn't backed him, I'm not hopeful he'll stay long.

Matt Rogers: All Hail Lee Johnson, gone from Public enemy number one to a great manager. What a turn around. Mr Lansdown, keep him at all costs

Mollie: Wagner has done wonders for Huddersfield Town since he joined. In 2 years he got us from 19th in the Championship to 11th in the Premier League. He's made a name for himself, and is so passionate for his team. Long may his managerial reign continue.

More news from United now - this time on the transfer front.

Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his squad.

United have already told Inter Milan they are not willing to enter into a loan agreement for Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and would only consider a straight sale.

However, Inter are not in a position to buy Mkhitaryan outright due to Financial Fair Play restrictions imposed by Uefa.

Relations between the clubs became strained in the summer during United's attempt to sign Ivan Perisic.

United fans who have been around a long time care about the way we play, not just the results. Mourinho has no interest beyond feeding his ego. He never talks of what United has achieved, only what he has achieved. He has never been the right man for the club.

  8. Jose says speculation over his future is "garbage"published at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

Man United v Derby County (Friday 20:00 GMT)

Jose Mourinho has been responding to speculation around his future and it's fair to say he's been pretty strong on the matter.

He's branded claims he is ready to walk out on Manchester United at the end of the season as "garbage".

He said: "I say garbage, I don't find a better word than to define the talk.

"The worst thing someone can do is put one inch of doubt into my professionalism, to every detail related to my job, so yes the garbage news affected me just on this aspect because it's something I don't admit.

"I repeat I am in the middle of my contract, if I am going to sign a new one it depends on the club but my commitment is total and I want to stay.

"I see myself here (after three years), is just a question of the club, the board the owners, Mr Woodward, they are all happy with my contribution and they want me to stay beyond the end of this contract."

  10. Mourinho in contract talks with Unitedpublished at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United are discussing a new contract with manager Jose Mourinho.

The 54-year-old's current deal does not expire until 2019, and United have the option of a year's extension.

However, it is understood detailed conversations have taken place between United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Mourinho's advisers over extending his stay at Old Trafford.

The news comes amid speculation Mourinho is considering leaving the club this summer.

This has bewildered sources at the club, who are adamant that Mourinho is happy at Old Trafford, despite obvious frustration at being 15 points adrift of a Manchester City side managed by his old rival Pep Guardiola.

In addition, they say whilst Mourinho does travel down to his home in London, where his family still live, the United boss is present on the training ground whenever the first team is there - unlike Sir Alex Ferguson, who in his latter years was not averse to missing the odd session.

Mourinho has made his feelings known both inside and outside the club that more needs to be spent on his squad to make it competitive.

Are you happy with that United fans? We'll hear from Jose after 1330 GMT....

As one of the idiots who chanted Fergie out and cheered when the ta ra Fergie banner was unfurled I hope that I have learned a lesson and therefore give Jose my total support. We don’t have a divine right to win every game and 2 trophies with a lot of average players was an exceptional start. Whilst away support has been, as always, superb, is it time to change the title theater of dreams to the theater? Out sung by Southampton is not acceptable - get behind the shirt and the manager. As for Rafa in. Are you off your heads?

  12. Everton discussing personal terms with Cenk Tosunpublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2018

Liverpool v Everton (Friday, 20.00 GMT)

Everton have agreed a fee for Turkey striker Cenk Tosun and are hoping he could be registered in time to feature against Liverpool.

They're in the process of sorting out personal terms but what are they getting?

Well, Tosun has helped Besiktas reach the last 16 of the Champions League and has scored 14 goals this season.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce identified the German-born Turkey international as the forward to add goals and threat to his squad following the failure to replace Romelu Lukaku after his £90m move to Manchester United.

He will become Allardyce's first signing since succeeding Ronald Koeman.

Brendan Rodgers is a fantastic coach/manager. Super happy with him. Think the target for Celtic now is to strengthen the squad for the CL games. We're consistent in qualifying but we need to break out the group stage if we want to take it to the next level. SPL on the other hand looking like it's on the up. Rangers, Aberdeen and Hearts all improving.

I wish my United friends would stop moaning about Mourinho! Any other fan apart from a City fan would be happy winning three trophies and currently being second in the league. Just remember the Moyes and Van Gaal days and you might stop moaning.

Simon Archer: All the talk of United fans wanting Mourinho out is rubbish. As a season ticket holder, no real fans want rid. Are they unhappy with some results? Absolutely. But nobody wants to get back on the managerial carousel.

Jack: it's not Mourinhos results that are the issue, it's his attitude, constant sulking and moaning, plus his pandering to other clubs (PSG).

Also on the topic of Managers... Graeme Murty for Rangers??? I like his high pressure style and it worked well against Celtic but we need some more transfers. We are one of the biggest clubs in Scotland. Why are we only bringing in loads of small players? I would like to see one good player that can consistently score goals whilst covering for Morelos. Moussa Morega from Porto would be a favourite for me.

Is Murty the man for Rangers long-term?

Mourinho is doing a good job. In any ‘normal’ season, Utd’s points total would be good enough to challenge for the title, City are just having an unprecedented season. I also don’t think he got his top targets in summer (Griezmann, Perisic, Morata). As a united fan, I agree we should be more attacking in big games, but Jose inherited a bang average squad and we are 2nd in the league behind the freak that is Man City. Jose is the man that has got us out of the post-Fergie hangover and back amongst the big boys, if Utd fans could be more patient and understand the magnitude of the job Mourinho took on maybe they could appreciate him a bit more
