There's definitely an air of optimism around the City Ground, brought up on by cup magic and the appointment of Aitor Karanka.

Villa can poop the party big time, they have won their past two league games and are in the promotion mix.

    Should be a good one.

The grass, lush and green, is visible at the end of the tunnel...

Two teams, pumped and ready, stand side-by-side. They stalk out, studs rattling on the concrete below.

Out to a roar. We're but minutes away from kick-off now.

Spare a thought for Kathryn Lichaj in the aftermath of Nottingham Forest's FA Cup victory over Arsenal.

Her husband Eric became a Forest hero as his two goals helped secure a shock 4-2 win against the cup holders at the City Ground on Sunday.

The USA international has been longing for a dog for some time, and they even had a deal - he scores a hat-trick and he gets a dog.

Two goals obviously do not make a hat-trick, but, after Forest team-mates and fans joined in Eric's crusade on social media, Kathryn eventually had no choice but to relent.

As for the choice of name, that had a little something to do with Sunday's win too...

I have fond memories of Forest-Villa games, after all I won the half-time raffle when I was a kid at a 2-2 draw between the teams in February 1991. Wish I still had all that hair, and that the Nottingham Evening Post had spelt my name right.

    Heady times.

I recall the delight of Stuart Pearce's ZDS Cup rocket, I remember the topsy-turvy joy of a first-minute Shaun Teale own-goal before being blasted away by Big Ron's class of '91-92 in one of my first away games and sadly when Franz Carr came back to haunt Forest in a drab FA Cup fifth round defeat.

You could probably define Aston Villa's performances this season by the old football cliche: "It depends which Aston Villa team turns up."

In some matches they're brilliant, then in others they look anything but promotion contenders.

Take their two matches in 2018 so far. They battered Bristol City 5-0 in the league, then a much-changed team was dumped out of the FA Cup by League One side Peterborough.

Manager Steve Bruce will hope to see a display similar to the dominant one they put in against the Robins at the City Ground today.

  6. 'Karanka relaxed and refreshed'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2018

Aitor Karanka talked passionately about embracing the challenge of taking Nottingham Forest back to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.

He seemed relaxed and refreshed after a 10-month break, but it was clear he had not become detached from English football.

The Spaniard has a reputation as a disciplinarian and his enthusiasm and focus was clear from his first news conference. His insistence that pressure is to be relished will be welcomed at a club with a proud history where the level of expectations have often seemed like a burden.

Karanka looked comfortable and, interestingly, spoke about the mutual trust that he said he felt between himself and the owners.

Nottingham Forest keep faith with the same side that beat Arsenal in the FA Cup last weekend, bar the suspended Joe Worrall who is replaced by Matt Mills.

Meanwhile, John Terry is in the side for Aston Villa as he returns to the club for whom he made six appearances for in the 1999-2000 season. The former England skipper was an initial doubt with an ankle problem before recovering to feature here.

Forest: Smith, Lichaj, Mancienne, Mills, Traore, Osborn, Cash, Clough, Brereton, Dowell, Vaughan.

Villa: Johnstone. Elmohamady, Chester, Terry, Hutton, Snodgrass, Whelan, Hourihane, Adomah, Grealish, Hogan.

A day after interim boss Gary Brazil had masterminded Nottingham Forest's surprise FA Cup win over holders Arsenal, Forest named Aitor Karanka as their new manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

The Spaniard had been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough near the end of last season.

Karanka is Forest's 10th full-time manager since Billy Davies' dismissal in June 2011.

This evening's game brings together two very different characters in the dugouts.

There's Steve Bruce, the steak and kidney pie, pint of foaming ale and a copy of the Racing Post kind of bloke.

Then you've got Aitor Karanka, more of an empanada, cool half of Sol at a Madrid street cafe.

It'll be a great match-up between their two clubs.

    Cheers, Adam.

Please excuse me for the gratuitous photos above.

Younger readers might wonder why a cup usually found in the hands of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo is being handled by Villa and Forest players.

These shots of legends Dennis Mortimer and John McGovern will bring a tear to the eye of those who experienced such highs, back when these two clubs landed more than a few blows on Europe's elite.

No two sets of Championship fans have more cause to wistfully look back on the past than Forest and Villa fans. Not even Leeds. These days their heavyweight inter-midlands tussles take place in the second tier.
