Juan Mata whips in a free-kick which is punched clear by Jonas Lossl.,

The ball comes back into the box and Terence Kongolo crunches into Scott McTominay as the United midfielder goes for a header.

United want a penalty, but Stuart Attwell is giving them nothing.

That was a hefty challenge and the club doctor gives McTominay the once over and checks his vision.

  3. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Huddersfield

Huddersfield are having just 20% possession but a rare foray into the United box brings Jose Mourinho off his seat to shout instructions.

This is quite ponderous by United.

Once again Rajiv van La Parra brings down Antonio Valencia for a free-kick in the same position as the first.

It is rare that silences are so impeccably observed as that one.

Usually there are a few latecomers making a noise in the concourses downstairs or a loudmouth or two shouting to make themselves heard.

Apart from a couple of Huddersfield fans who started to applaud and quickly stopped, there was nothing other than the hum of electricity and the sound of vehicles on the road outside.

Cagey start at Old Trafford, which will probably be a relief for the home side after Spurs scored after just 11 seconds in midweek.

No attack from either side, both teams biding their time.

After a shock to the system away to Tottenham in midweek, where Manchester United lost by two or more goals for only the second time in 87 games in all competitions, they return to a fixture that has equally haunting connotations.

I was in West Yorkshire in October to witness Huddersfield's first win over United since 1952; a day, whatever happens this season, that will live long in the memory for all Terriers fans.

Jose Mourinho will hope for an immediate reaction and a far more routine afternoon for Alexis Sanchez's home debut, and to maintain a record where only Manchester City have won at Old Trafford in the last 39 matches.

Huddersfield have far more crucial fixtures lying in wait although, as David Wagner told me earlier in the week, they are playing at the Theatre of Dreams.

Premier League: Is the title race over?

With City 16 points clear before kick-off, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has conceded the title race.

But the race for second place is his new battle ground.

The defeat to Spurs in midweek was damaging, but with Chelsea losing to Bournemouth, United have a three point cushion over Antonio Conte's side and Liverpool.

A win today is crucial to United's ambition of finishing behind Pep Guardiola's juggernaut.

The Terriers are plummeting down the league and are without a win in seven games - their last win coming against Watford on 16 December.

That victory was only their second in 14 games.

David Wagner's side have lost their last four league games, conceding 12 goals.

  17. Mourinho on Pogbapublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2018

    Man Utd v Huddersfield (15:00GMT)

Jose Mourinho was cagey when asked in his pre-match interview why Paul Pogba had been dropped to the bench.

"I play Scott McTominay. He arrived here aged nine years old and spent many years in the academy, he has been waiting for an opportunity which I give him now and again, today is another one."

On the Munich tributes, he said: "Today is an event in memory for everybody connected to football, not just our club, but for everybody connected with the game. It is one of the biggest tragedies in the history of the game. Today is a moment of respect for the victims, for their families. And of course we would like to win, to play well and bring some happiness to the stadium.”

Since his return to Manchester United in 2016, today is the first time Paul Pogba has been dropped to the bench.

The key is what message is Jose Mourinho sending out?

Manchester United shouldn't need two holding midfielders at home, so even if Pogba is slightly deficient in the defensive aspect of his game, there is no need to do without him.

More likely it is a punishment for not following orders at Tottenham, where United were behind after 11 seconds and, by Mourinho's own admission, were poor.

Even at £89m, you can't do what you want.

Manchester United will mark 60 years since the Munich air disaster at today's game by observing a minute's silence before kick-off.

Players will also wear black armbands, while fans will receive a commemorative book and pin.

Before the game, supporters were invited to pay their respects under the Munich plaque at the south-east corner of Old Trafford.

On 6 February 1958, a plane carrying Manchester United players and staff crashed at Munich airport with the club returning from a European Cup game against Red Star Belgrade.

Twenty-three people were killed in the disaster, including eight United players and three club officials.
