This fixture last season was Neil Warnock’s first game in charge of Cardiff City, and it was a memorable one.

With tempers flaring on the field and the atmosphere hostile off it, Cardiff won 2-1 thanks to goals from Peter Whittingham and debutant Sol Bamba.

Bamba captains the Bluebirds today and, whereas last season’s win lifted Cardiff out of the relegation zone, victory this afternoon would restore the four-point gap between themselves in second place and Aston Villa in third.

Controversy here, as Joe Ralls plays the ball in behind Bristol City centre-back Nathan Baker.

Callum Paterson gets ahead of him and is brought down by the defender after a hand-off.

The Bluebirds are calling for a red card, but Paul Tierney isn't swayed by their protests and shows Baker yellow instead.

Cardiff City keeper Neil Etheridge has the midday sun streaming in his eyes early on, but isn't wearing a cap.

Both sides have had early long throws. Not much subtlety early on, but the respective defences have dealt with the danger.

There's been some feisty build-up to this Severnside derby from both camps.

First Robins boss Lee Johnson said he didn't think the atmosphere at the Cardiff City Stadium would be that intimidating, as there are often "quite a few empty seats" at the ground.

Then Cardiff manager Neil Warnock fired back, saying: "Lee is like his dad [ex-Bristol City manager Gary]. He talks a good game, I don't listen to what he says."

Ouch. Warnock's bad blood with Johnson senior stems from the infamous Freddie Sears "ghost goal" in 2009, when the forward was playing for Warnock's Crystal Palace against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Still, at least those quotes make a change from the usual banalities. And everyone enjoys a bit of beef on a Sunday lunchtime, no?

    Kick-off is minutes away.

Cardiff come into the match with the blip which threatened to derail their automatic promotion bid over the festive period firmly behind them.

The Bluebirds have gone seven games unbeaten in the Championship since losing at QPR on 1 January, and Neil Warnock's side have won their last three.

However, 2018 has proved rather difficult for Bristol City.

The visitors have only won one of their last nine in the league, and were knocked out of both cup competitions last month.

With several clubs in the chasing pack, the Robins are in danger of dropping out of the Championship's top six if they don't turn around their form.

It’s a beautiful day for a derby in Cardiff, but beware the clear blue skies and sunshine – it is absolutely freezing here.

Neil Warnock and Lee Johnson have both done their bit to stoke the fires for this afternoon’s encounter; the former saying there is “genuine” bad blood between the two and the latter dismissing the atmosphere at Cardiff City Stadium as being less than intimidating.

With Cardiff second in the Championship table and Bristol City in sixth place, this match is about more than old Severnside rivalries – this could have a major bearing on the race for promotion.

Cardiff could move back to four points clear of third-placed Aston Villa if they win this afternoon.

The Bluebirds could also close the gap to leaders Wolves, who lost at Fulham on Saturday evening, to six points. Is the title still winnable for Neil Warnock's men?

Bristol City, meanwhile, are aiming to consolidate their place in the play-offs.

Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are just two points behind the Robins, with Preston one point further back.
