What a season it has been for Manchester City's German forward Leroy Sane. He has played a vital role in helping City to top spot in the Premier League and into the Champions League quarter-finals.

He will be up against some familiar opponents, with City team-mates Fernandinho and Gabriel Jesus starting for Brazil, and Ederson on the bench, although another City man, Ilkay Gundogan, is also in the Germany squad.

Germany have made six changes to the XI that started the match against Spain. Brazil give a game to former captain Thiago Silva, who these days is usually a substitute. He missed the infamous semi-final against Germany in 2014 because of suspension.

Four years later, Fernandinho and Marcelo are the only remainers of the Mineirazo starting the game here at the Olympiastadion.

    Brazil
Five-time World Cup winners and ranked second in the world

Brazil coach Tite has included five players in the squad - Marcelo, Fernandinho, Willian, Fred and Paulinho - from the squad mauled by the Germans in 2014.

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho replaces Douglas Costa in the only change from the team which beat Russia 3-0 in Moscow on Friday without the injured Neymar.

There is further Premier League interest as Chelsea's Willian and Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus also start, while Liverpool's Roberto Firmino and Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson are among the substitutes.

Brazil XI: Alisson, Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, Miranda, Marcelo, Paulinho, Casemiro, Fernandinho, Willian, Jesus, Coutinho.

    Germany
World Cup holders and ranked one in the world

Thomas Muller and Mesut Ozil, who both played in the 1-1 draw with Spain on Friday, have gone back to Bayern Munich and Arsenal respectively, while Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira also played on Friday but has been struggling with a back injury.

Manuel Neuer is not in the squad as he recovers from a fractured foot and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has been rested, leaving Kevin Trapp and Bernd Leno to play a half each. Hertha Berlin's Marvin Plattenhardt will be playing on his home ground - the Olympiastadion in Berlin - as the left-back makes only his sixth international appearance.

Manchester City pair Leroy Sane and Ilkay Gundogan start, as does Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

Germany's Jerome Boateng, who will captain the side in Khedira's absence, said: "It is still an important game and there are other reasons Muller and Ozil aren't here anymore.

"They have both played a lot this season and they shouldn't be over played. Those involved don't always play for the national team, but in games like this you can test things, the Brazilians are also missing players."

Germany XI: Trapp, Plattenhardt, Draxler, Kroos, Rudiger, Boateng, Kimmich, Sane, Gundogan, Gomez, Goretzka.

  6. 'The wound is still open'published at 19:35 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Germany v Brazil (19:45 BST)

They have not exactly forgotten about that match in Brazil...

"This has a huge psychological meaning - no-one needs to fool themselves about that," Brazil coach Tite told Kicker., external

"The 7-1 is like a ghost, people still talk about it. The more you talk about it, the less this ghost disappears. I was watching the game at home in Sao Paulo with my wife and after the third goal went in, she started to cry.

"That started me off. It was a moment of great inspiration for Germany, every shot was a goal - stuff like that doesn't even happen in video games.

"The wound is still open and the match in Berlin is a part of the process of closing it."
