Kenedy scored his first two goals for Newcastle as the Magpies eased their relegation fears with a fine win over a desperately poor Southampton.

The hosts went ahead after 63 seconds when Kenedy, on loan from Chelsea, collected Jonjo Shelvey's pass on his chest, spun and shot on the half-volley past Alex McCarthy.

Kenedy then doubled the advantage, finishing off a quick counter-attack from a Southampton corner after good work by Ayoze Perez and Dwight Gayle.

The hosts added a third in the second half when Shelvey set up the unmarked Matt Ritchie, who steered his shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner.

It was a big match, and Newcastle were very good, but Southampton were terrible.

The kind of performance that makes a manager very, very nervous about his job.

Southampton are one point above the relegation zone, but will drop into it if Crystal Palace beat Chelsea later on today.

The Saints have been desperately poor today.

They will be talking about this game for a very long time if Southampton pull this one out of the fire.

A sad ending to Jonjo Shelvey's day. Two assists for the returning England midfielder. He has to go off with Mikel Merino coming on.

It's been a really poor performance by Southampton. They haven't been hammered too many times this season but this is a bad time to suffer a result like this. If things don't go their way today, they could be in the bottom three.

Finally a shot on target for Southampton. Guido Carrillo gets in front of marker Jamaal Lascelles but the connection is not great and it is easy for Martin Dubravka.

Another chance for the hosts, and again it is as the feet of Kenedy, but he scuffs his effort wide.

Some people may be making a tidy sum if the Brazilian scores again. 400-1 he was at the start of the game for a hat-trick.

So nearly the game is out of Southampton's reach as Ayoze Perez meets a left-wing corner but can only head on to the roof of the net.

Almost a third for Kenedy, as an intelligent reverse pass from Ayoze Perez gave the Brazilian a half chance, but some desperate Southampton defending means he can't get a shot off.
