Kenedy scored his first two goals for Newcastle as the Magpies eased their relegation fears with a fine win over a desperately poor Southampton.

The hosts went ahead after 63 seconds when Kenedy, on loan from Chelsea, collected Jonjo Shelvey's pass on his chest, spun and shot on the half-volley past Alex McCarthy.

Kenedy then doubled the advantage, finishing off a quick counter-attack from a Southampton corner after good work by Ayoze Perez and Dwight Gayle.

The hosts added a third in the second half when Shelvey set up the unmarked Matt Ritchie, who steered his shot from 20 yards into the bottom corner.

    Newcastle United 3-0 Southampton

It was a big match, and Newcastle were very good, but Southampton were terrible.

The kind of performance that makes a manager very, very nervous about his job.

Southampton are one point above the relegation zone, but will drop into it if Crystal Palace beat Chelsea later on today.

The Saints have been desperately poor today.

  6. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 80 mins

    Newcastle United 3-0 Southampton

A sad ending to Jonjo Shelvey's day. Two assists for the returning England midfielder. He has to go off with Mikel Merino coming on.

Another great reception from the home fans. Well deserved as well.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2018

    Newcastle United 3-0 Southampton

Anyone who had a Kenedy hat-trick at 400-1 will be disappointed as he has just gone off. He gets a great reception from the home fans, he has been excellent.

Gman: Sadly for Pellegrino if/when Saints go down he will be remembered as the worst manager in the history of the club, especially considering the quality players he has at his disposal.

Scott Clark‏: Which decent football managers are looking for a short term contract, with potential of extension depending on results? Asking for a friend. #saintsfc, external

Jack Tanner‏: To think Southampton weren't happy with Puel because he only got them to eighth and a cup final last season #becarefulwhatyouwishfor, external

  10. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 16:27 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2018

Substitution for the hosts. Joselu on, Dwight Gayle, who has an assist for Newcastle's second, the man replaced.

Jack Stephens shoves Ayoze Perez to the floor and gets a booking. Can't really argue with that one.

Afam Udeozo‏: How Southampton have unravelled. This is a club who were unsatisfied last season with eighth place and sacked their manager.

Bayo Omisore: Jonjo Shelvey running that midfield like a boss. Russia calling?

Half a chance for Southampton. Jack Stephens meets a corner, but can only head well over the bar.

    Danny Mills
Former England defender on Final Score

It's been a really poor performance by Southampton. They haven't been hammered too many times this season but this is a bad time to suffer a result like this. If things don't go their way today, they could be in the bottom three.

Great goal, Jonjo Shelvey does exceptionally well. Cuts in and looks like he is going to shoot but squares the ball for Matt Richie, who finishes low past the keeper. That’s game over now.

Finally a shot on target for Southampton. Guido Carrillo gets in front of marker Jamaal Lascelles but the connection is not great and it is easy for Martin Dubravka.

    Matt Ritchie

A third for Newcastle. Jonjo Shelvey gets his second assist of the day, he has time and space on the edge of the Southampton box. He squares it to Matt Ritchie, who is also unmarked, and he slots it low and side-footed past Alex McCarthy.

Southampton are a shambles. Newcastle delight.

Another chance for the hosts, and again it is as the feet of Kenedy, but he scuffs his effort wide.

Some people may be making a tidy sum if the Brazilian scores again. 400-1 he was at the start of the game for a hat-trick.

So nearly the game is out of Southampton's reach as Ayoze Perez meets a left-wing corner but can only head on to the roof of the net.

    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

Almost a third for Kenedy, as an intelligent reverse pass from Ayoze Perez gave the Brazilian a half chance, but some desperate Southampton defending means he can't get a shot off.
