    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

A couple of half-time changes for Southampton to tell you about. Dusan Tadic and Mario Lemina, whose mistake led to Newcastle's second goal, have gone off with Shane Long and Josh Sims coming on.

Newcastle will be very satisfied. Good performance, nothing too intricate. Matt Ritchie and Kenedy have put in a shift out wide, similarly with Shelvey and Diame in midfield, not taking any risks.

Southampton have been poor, on this form you would have to worry for them.

Pellegrino is the worst manager Saints have had. He's relegated the club.

Easy, very easy for Newcastle. Southampton have been terrible.

    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

One reason for Southampton not creating anything has been the performance of Mohamed Diame. Sitting in front of the defence, the Newcastle man has broken up anything that has come near him.

    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

Only one registered shot from Southampton, Cedric Soares' wayward effort. Nothing on target.

Hoping the Southampton fans are flying back home - Newcastle to Southampton is a long old way to be on a miserable coach when your team have served up this rubbish for you.

    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

Southampton (on the right below) have had more possession (68%) and more touches of the ball (237 to Newcastle's 112) but as the touchmaps below show, the home side have had more of the ball where it matters most - in the opposition area.

Not much love out there for Mauricio Pellegrino...

Terry Pointer: Been saying it all season - Saints going down. Clueless manager - we dont score - only plays 1 striker... He inherited a good defence and has totally confused them!

Amrul Choudhury: Southampton finally realising that selling your best players to Liverpool will catch up on you sooner rather than later. Selling and not replacing like for like can affect even some of the top clubs, ask FC Porto.

James Warren: I can’t believe how quickly we have turned into a joke in this league. How on earth is this guy still our manager?? 68% possession, yet 2 shots against us, both on target, both scored. What are we DOING?

Hugh Griffiths: Two cheap goals saints have only got themselves to blame zero urgency and zero attacking ideas.

  10. A rare Newcastle doublepublished at 35 mins

    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

Kenedy is the first Newcastle player to score twice in a home game this season.

  11. 'Brilliant Newcastle goal'published at 15:35 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2018

    Newcastle United 2-0 Southampton

    Michael O'Neill
Northern Ireland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

Absolutely brilliant goal. Florian Lejeune clears it and Lemina misses the header. Perez does briliantly, runs 60 or so yards with the ball.

He's aware Dwight Gayle is running with him, gives it to Gayle, and he unselfishly passes to Kenedy to score. Brilliant goal by Newcastle.

    Amrul Choudhury‏: Kenedy for Presidency?

Graham Green‏: I hope Southampton enjoy being back in the Championship next season. They are certainly doing everything they can to get back there. Shambolic again today.

David Ljunggren: This Southampton side look as though they are down already. They can't pass, can't shoot, can't run.

Conceding a goal from your own corner. Unforgivable.

GOAL - Newcastle United 2-0 Southamptonpublished at 15:29 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2018

    Kenedy

A Southampton corner, and within 30 seconds they are 2-0 down.

Another embarrassment for Mario Lemina. He is on the edge of the Newcastle penalty area, misses his attempt at a shot and Newcastle counter at great pace.

They have a three-on-two attacking situation and use it perfectly. Ayoze Perez runs at the away defence, slides it into Dwight Gayle and his unselfish one-touch pass gives Kenedy with a simple tap-in.

    A beautifully-worked counter-attacking goal. Disaster for Southampton.

Two for Kenedy, two for Newcastle.

    Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton

Dwight Gayle missed a chance earlier on with a poor first touch and he has another opportunity. He strikes low, left-footed from outside the penalty area after Mario Lemina is robbed by Mohamed Diame.

But the effort is weak, and it is a routine diving save for Alex McCarthy.

Southampton then have their first attempt at goal, but Cedric Soares' attempt is so bad, so high and so wide that it doesn't deserve to be called an attempt.

    Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton

    Michael O'Neill
Northern Ireland manager on BBC Radio 5 live

The early goal has allowed Newcastle to sit in with two banks of four and counter attack. Southampton have been casual in possession at times and Newcastle will be trying to exploit that.

Joe Worrall‏: If Newcastle stay up, Rafael Benitez deserves every Manager of the Year accolade without question. Keeping a Championship-level side in the Premier League is so much more impressive than Pep spending £200m and running away with the league.

    Danny Mills
Former England defender on Final Score

When you're down at the bottom, you've got to play percentages. Shelvey put it into the box and they scored. Even if you've been playing well, if you're near the bottom of the table then it's not worked. Change it up. More teams that are struggling should do that.

    Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton

A half-hearted shout for handball as Matt Ritchie's cross hits a Southampton defender. There are some shouts from the fans for a handball in the area, but referee Andre Marriner is not interested.

Jack Stephens was very close to Ritchie, the cross was hit powerfully and Stephens' arms were by his side. Good decision, ref.
