And so ends another thrilling night in the English Football League. Jack Grealish's stunning late strike - in front of the watching Duke of Cambridge - prolonged Cardiff City's misery as they slipped to third in the Championship at the expense of Fulham.

Sunderland picked up a point at the other end of the table but it should really have been three, while Wigan moved top of League One with a thumping local derby win against Rochdale.

Fulham's win against Reading not only moved them into second place in the Championship, but it also means Wolves now cannot go up on Wednesday when they take on Derby County at Molineux.

Sunderland were the only side in the bottom six to pick up a point, and they were pegged back late on by Norwich.

Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor were due to leave Ipswich at the end of the season, but a statement on the club website has confirmed their immediate departures.

"I spoke with (owner) Marcus Evans at the weekend and we agreed that it was in the best interests for me, the players and the club that I move on now,” said McCarthy.

“I said I would see the season out but it’s been a new experience and it’s not one I have been enjoying to be honest.

“I have continued to do my job to the best of my ability but there is something missing and I’m not comfortable with that."

Straight after a 1-0 win over Barnsley, Ipswich have announced that manager Mick McCarthy is leaving the club with immediate effect.

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce told Sky Sports:

"It gives us another chance. It breathes life into us again after a disappointing few weeks of results.

"The most important thing is the response. It was a must-win for us and it was always going to be difficult against Neil's team.

"It doesn't matter who you play, we've looked at the results today and it's unbelievable. Fulham are on an unbelievable run.

"Is there a little bit around the corner? Who knows. Can we take enough points? We've set ourselves a target and we need to win all our remaining games if we're to have a chance."

Millwall's remarkable run of form continues, goals from Tom Elliott and Ben Marshall earning them a routine three points at Bolton.

Wanderers stay two points above the bottom three.

There are just three added minutes to be played at Bolton.

Millwall - last season's League One play-off champions - will be in the Championship play-off spots tonight.

Aston Villa goalscorer Jack Grealish told Sky Sports:

"It is always good to score a goal, especially late on in a big game. The main thing was to come out and get three points.

"We've had a sticky patch recently. We owe a lot to [goalkeeper] Sam Johnstone, who made a lot of saves to keep us in it, but I'm happy to score.

"[Automatic promotion] is still possible. We've got a good few games left. Everyone who watches the Championship knows what it's about. It's still all to play for."

Aston Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone told Sky Sports:

"What a strike from Jack. It's my job to keep the ball out the net. It's a team performance.

"The crowd and noise helped us push towards the end.

"Luckily Jack's popped up with a wonder goal."

There really isn't any hint of a Bolton comeback at the Macron.

If anything, Millwall look more like adding to their lead, Shaun Williams having a long-range effort deflected off target.

Tim Cahill has been introduced for the final few minutes to help see the match out.

And with the full-time whistles blowing at Villa Park and at Deepdale, that leaves just one Championship game still to finish.

Millwall look completely in control at Bolton,who can at least take comfort from seeing their rivals in the relegation scrap all drop points tonight.

Jack Grealish's dramatic late winner gives Aston Villa all three points and Cardiff City, who had been on an immense unbeaten run prior to losing against Wolves on Friday, have now lost two games in a row.

Neil Warnock's Bluebirds slip to third in the table and are leapfrogged by Fulham who have beaten Reading at Craven Cottage.

Villa move to within five points of second place with victory.

Preston still need a lot of results to go their way, but they remain in the play-off hunt after fighting back from 1-0 down at half-time against Leeds.

They made hard work of it in the end, but two goals from Lee Evans are enough to see Sheffield United past Middlesbrough.

The Blades will be three points behind sixth-placed Millwall, assuming the Lions hold onto their two-goal lead at Bolton.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday mounting a bit of a comeback in the second half, QPR's storming first 15 minutes helps them to victory at Loftus Road.

All over at Ashton Gate. Blues are beaten, but nobody else towards the bottom can take advantage and Garry Monk's side will remain three points above the relegation zone.
