Lyon's England full-back Lucy Bronze was playing against her old club and was less than complimentary about her side's performance.

"I think we were very poor, especially in the first half," she told BBC Radio 5 live.

"We changed it in the second half but by then I think we had some tired legs from chasing more than we needed to in the first half.

"City played their game plan well and probably planned better than we did.

"The expectation at this club is to always play well and I don't think that we played to our standards in the first half."

Manchester City went out to Lyon at this stage of last year's Champions League, losing the home leg 3-1 to the French giants.

So boss Nick Cushing was especially pleased with the 0-0 draw against the same opponents in the first leg earlier today.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "I'm proud because of the effort and endeavour in the moments when we were under pressure, and also because what a difference a year makes - last year we gave away a penalty after 30 seconds and gave away three away goals.

"I thought we put them under pressure at times. I said to the players afterwards that I was disappointed we didn't score because we had some opportunities."

While the two teams take a break in London, let's reflect on Manchester City's draw with defending European champions Lyon earlier today.

And there's the whistle to end a breathless first half.

It all started so well for Chelsea with Ji So-yun's second-minute strike, but Wolfsburg have been excellent in response and they lead at the break.

I'm still trying to clear up who got the final touch to that second Wolfsburg goal - having had a second (and third and fourth!) look, I think it'll go down as an own goal by Maren Mjelde, who was jumping alongside Alexandra Popp and fellow Chelsea defender Millie Bright inside the six-yard box.

Our TV commentator Nigel Adderley thinks it might be Bright's own goal! Either way, Chelsea are behind at half-time.

    Chelsea 1-2 Wolfsburg

Ooh, that's nasty. Gilly Flaherty goes in high on her opponent and is rightly booked.

  6. goal

GOAL: Chelsea 1-2 Wolfsburgpublished at 42 mins

    Alexandra Popp

Chelsea can't deal with the set-piece this time, and Wolfsburg deservedly take the lead for the first time.

Alexandra Popp is claiming it, but I'm not sure she got the final touch.

Maybe an own goal? One to revisit at half-time...

  7. YELLOW CARD (Spence)published at 41 mins

Now it's the name of Drew Spence of Chelsea that enters the referee's notebook for fouling Alexandra Popp.

Wolfsburg captain Nilla Fischer is the first player to be booked for hauling down Erin Cuthbert on the angle of the penalty area.

A good position for Chelsea, this...

And it almost produces a goal! But Magdalena Eriksson's powerful set-piece is pushed clear by Almuth Schult. It wasn't on target, but Schult did well to punch the ball to safety.

    Chelsea 1-1 Wolfsburg

Chelsea's first attacking moment of note for a good 20 minutes.

Drew Spence's low cross is well defended but Ji So-yun is afforded a shot at goal, which is deflected behind for a corner.

England centre-back Millie Bright heads just over from the resulting centre.

That's better from the home side.

    Chelsea 1-1 Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg's Lena Goessling floats a free-kick into the penalty box from deep, which drifts off a Wolfsburg head for a goal kick.

    Chelsea 1-1 Wolfsburg

Alexandra Popp is seizing control of this game for Wolfsburg, pinging 50-yard crossfield balls to team-mates for fun.

For all of their attacking pressure, though, they haven't been able to take the lead.

There's an interested spectator in the crowd at Kingsmeadow - England coach Phil Neville.

He's watching Chelsea trying to see off a succession of Wolfsburg attacks, which they're managing to do at the moment.

That Wolfsburg equaliser has changed the whole mood of this match.

Having looked full of nerves in the first 15 minutes, Wolfsburg have turned on the style since then and should be ahead.

Striker Ewa Pajor gets clear of the last Chelsea defender but she drags her effort wide of the post. A big chance missed.

I was about to say how the frenetic pace had slowed a little before Wolfsburg's equaliser.

That's definitely the case now as the visitors keep possession of the ball for a long period, but without worrying the Chelsea goal too much.

It's going to be interesting to see how Chelsea respond now.

They need to make sure they don't have too many errors in possession.

  16. goal

GOAL: Chelsea 1-1 Wolfsburgpublished at 17 mins

    Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir

Disappointment for Chelsea as Wolfsburg notch a superbly-taken equaliser and a crucial away goal.

Lara Dickenmann creates space on the left and crosses for Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir to power a header past Hedvig Lindahl.

No chance for the Chelsea goalkeeper.

    Chelsea 1-0 Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg have their best passage of play in the match so far, earning a corner, but Chelsea's Hedvig Lindahl claims the cross into the box expertly.

Just the kind of early statement you want your goalkeeper to make if you're a defender.

There's already a noticeable rise in the pace and energy of this match compared to the Manchester City v Lyon game earlier today.

There was plenty of effort and glimpses of quality on show, but that game - which ended goalless - never really got going.

This one has sparked into life straight away, helped by Ji So-yun's second-minute opener for Chelsea. Wolfsburg look shell-shocked.

  19. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Wolfsburg

Fran Kirby has started the match superbly, buzzing around as the figurehead of Chelsea's 4-5-1 formation.

The in-form England striker had already shown her willingness to put the Wolfsburg defence under pressure on the ball and that endeavour resulted in Chelsea's opening goal.

Another goal almost comes after a Chelsea free-kick from out wide, but the German side avert the danger.

Wolfsburg are a very experienced European side with many quality international players.

So Chelsea have got to be switched on for the whole 90 minutes.
