I've been fortunate to attend some big women's football games in the past, but never before have I seen the press box so packed for a women's game.

Just a few years ago, there were rows of empty seats in the media area for this final. Not today.

A couple of hopeful, searching long balls forward are all we have to show so far.

But then Beth Mead gets away on the left and twists and turns but her pull-back is cleared by Katie Chapman.

I’d say there’s a family feel to this crowd. I can safely say I have never seen so many children at a football match.

The organisers are trying inspire the next generation of fans and they appear to be succeeding.

There’s no doubting who English Women’s football’s star of the season has been, after Chelsea striker Fran Kirby took both the PFA and FWA player of the year awards.

The England international’s other recent double - her two well-taken goals that won April’s semi-final against Manchester City - have set up the chance for her to make more headlines today.

In 2016, Kirby missed a fine chance to score for Chelsea, when one-on-one, and she was ineligible to play in the 2015 final, not long after her transfer from Reading.

Today, will this stronger, more experienced and more clinical 24-year-old take her chance when it comes and lead her side to glory?

Chelsea skipper and former Arsenal midfielder Katie Chapman has already won the cup nine times in her career. The England international is now bidding for a record 10th success.

She won her first Women's FA Cup with Millwall Lionesses, aged 14, in 1997.

"That in itself is unbelievable, to talk about winning nine FA Cups, and she has started in every one of those final as well," Hayes said.

"She's been instrumental in the progression of the club over the past five years, with her collective wisdom and experience, her know-how on the biggest stage."

This is no ordinary cup final for Emma Hayes - the 41-year-old Chelsea boss is pregnant with twins.

But although she won't lead her team out at Wembley this afternoon, it is otherwise "business as usual".

“We’ve become a club now accustomed to competing on all fronts, so as far as we’re concerned, it’s business as usual this week," she told BBC Sport.

“We treat every game like it’s a cup final, so it’s no different this week to the week before.

“It’s my local stadium, so I’ve got probably the shortest trip of the season, and that will do my pregnancy well.”

It includes an FA statement from yonks ago that is positively toecurling.

And the prize money up for grabs suggests there is still much work to be done for the women's game.

    Gotta love Subbuteo though.

“It’s always a difficult, big game between us, it doesn’t matter who’s playing. Always expect drama.

“We’ve both had quite hectic run-ups towards the final, with games back-to-back. If we can get our recovery strategies right then hopefully we can get an edge.”

Chelsea “did not turn up” for 2016’s final against Arsenal, according to manager Emma Hayes.

The Gunners won 1-0 thanks to Danielle Carter’s curling strike, when these two clubs met here, two years ago.

The star of the show that day was arguably England legend Kelly Smith, then a veteran of the Arsenal side at the age of 37, as she defied her advancing years with a timeless, classy display in the number 10 role to upstage the relative youngsters in Blue.

Smith has since retired, and both sides have brought in several new personnel since then, including decorated internationals. Is today the day that a newer name can step up on the big stage in the way that Smith so often tended to?
