Lee: Such a shame that for Dzagoev

Steven: Didn't have high hopes for this game but both teams going for it!

Ebenezer: Saudi Arabia look very promising. They aren't as bad as I thought or expected

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Saudi have their first shot on or off target today - unfortunately it's off target as Salem Al Dawsari blasts one well over from 30 yards out. Ambitious, or maybe just couldn't see a better option.

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Denis Cheryshev, who has been decent every time I've seen him in La Liga, takes on a few men down the left but eventually runs out of steam.

The Saudis aren't offering much so far.

  4. 'They can win this by three or four'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It looks like Russia's game plan is to hit Saudi Arabia on the counter attack and I think they can win this game by three or four.

Yuri Gazinskiy is the first player to score with the first shot on target at a World Cup tournament since Germany's Philipp Lahm in 2006.

The Fan Fest in Kaliningrad is packed for the opening match. It is a muggy evening here and even though they are 1200kms away from Moscow the fans are living every kick of the game. There are two hopes here - one is for a Russian win and second is that those threatening clouds don’t burst!

  7. 'End of Dzagoev's tournament?'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

Dzagoev is one of their big players. He pulls up straight away with the left hamstring and I would say that is the end of his tournament.

It is a real shame. He will be devastated.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 25 mins

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

That is Alan Dzagoev's game over - he's replaced by Villarreal's former Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev.

Will we see Dzagoev again in this World Cup? He looks devastated.

  9. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Russia's Alan Dzagoev goes down clutching his hamstring while leaving the ball for a team-mate, no opposition player was near him. This could be a worry for the hosts.

  10. 'Struggling'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

Saudi Arabia are struggling here and the intensity and physicality of this Russian side is starting to become a problem for them. Russia have been the much better side in these early stages.

Saudi Arabia are showing a level of naivety by knocking the ball around in defence. It is dangerous play and they need to be doing that in the final third.

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia are on the ropes at the moment and another Aleksandr Samedov cross is past everyone.

As I write that, the boys in green are almost level. They break and Mohammed Al Sahlawi's header is deflected inches wide. Very close.

  12. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Anyone else pretty relieved that we're not going to get a 0-0 in the opener?

Russia have another attack but Aleksandr Samedov's low cross towards the box is dreadful and the Saudis get possession.

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Assistant referees have been told to keep their flags down for tight offside calls in the World Cup, so VAR can make a decision, rather than ending a legitimate attack abruptly.

So we could get lots of incidents like that this summer.

  16. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Russia almost have a second goal. Fedor Smolov's shot is deflected and loops into the air, but Saudi keeper Abdullah Al-Mayoof leaps like a slamon into the air to claw it away.

A Russian player looked offside in the build-up to the goal so we might have had VAR if it had gone in.

  17. 'Go long'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

The goal has been coming. The ball in is good and aerially Russia have been causing problems and Gazinskiy gets there and gets his head on it to give his side the lead.

Going long for Russia is a good formula so get as many balls into the box and they will have more opportunities.

  18. 'Five or Six Russians could've got on the end of it'published at 16:16 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

It comes down the left-hand side, Aleksandr Golovin puts in an in-swinger and there were five or six Russians who could've got on the end of it, but it only took one. Great start

For all the pre-tournament concerns, the hosts are ahead in the World Cup opener. The camera pans to Vladimir Putin shaking the hands of Saudi Arabia's representative.
