    Russia 2-0 Saudi Arabia

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

It is third time lucky for Denis Cheryshev. The play from Golovin was excellent and the little cut inside was brilliant from Cheryshev and then he showed the composure to smash it into the net

  3. 'Russia too quick for the visitors'published at 16:46 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 2-0 Saudi Arabia

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Every opportunity Russia have to hit them on the break, they are far too quick for Saudi Arabia, and they can go and get four or five goals if they want to.

GOAL - Russia 2-0 Saudi Arabiapublished at 43 mins

    Denis Cheryshev

Now there's some noise in this ground! The hosts are 2-0 up in the World Cup opener.

Russia break from their own half. Roman Zobnin plays a ball to Denis Cheryshev, which looks a little short for the Villarreal winger. But the substitute manages to compose himself enough to take the ball past a defender and then smash it into the roof of the net.

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

The crowd has gone pretty quiet in the Luzhniki Stadium.

Wasteful from Russia winger Denis Cheryshev, who goes past a Saudi defender leaving him on the ground, then tries to go past him again but running it out of play.

Saudi striker Mohammed Al Sahlawi has made just seven touches so far in the first half, with two of those from kick-off.

  8. 'Russia in full control'published at 16:40 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Russia are playing some really nice football in the middle of the park. You can see the posture has changed and they are now in full control, but Saudi Arabia could still surprise them.

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Aleksandr Golovin tries to play a ball through to Fedor Smolov, who just leaves it. He knows he was offside. The linesman might have let him play on under this new guidance - but it would eventually have been ruled out by VAR had it led to a goal.

Smolov saves us all the hassle of that.

  10. 'Schoolboy stuff'published at 16:39 British Summer Time 14 June 2018

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

A brilliant challenge, Russia were two v two. To be fair to Omar he watched the ball and put in a perfect challenge. But that is three or four times Saudi Arabia have been caught two v two or three v three. It is schoolboy stuff from Saudi Arabia.

  12. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 36 mins

    Russia 1-0 Saudi Arabia

Aleksandr Golovin goes down in the box and wants a penalty...

He doesn't get it though as Osama Hawsawi wins the ball. The referee doesn't even need to get VAR involved.

Hawsawi wants Golovin booked as he does the old imaginary waving a card to the referee. Don't think it was a dive though, just a fair tackle.

Harrison: The Saudi defence is rubbish. Russia have the men to win this game comfortably but always seem to lack the final product

Wayne: The Saudis look terrible. Doesn’t bode well for when the World Cup is extended to 48 teams in 2022

Salem Al Dawsari evades a couple of weak tackles to run 40 yards but then runs out of steam. No repeat of Saudi Arabia's 1994 wonder goal.

Russia's Fedor Smolov gets into the box, tries a bit of showboating to get past Osama Hawsaw, loses the ball and then fouls the Saudi captain. A waste.

Free-kick to Saudi Arabia. Salman Al Faraj has about seven men to pick out in the box and finds Yasir Al Shahrani with a floated cross but Al Shahrani heads over the bar. This is better from the Saudis though.
