Charlie: Looks like VAR will get the award for most assists this World Cup.

James: Finally, have we seen a VAR decision that no one will be able to argue?

  3. 'I didn't think it was a penalty at first'published at 14:26 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Sweden 1-0 South Korea

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

My first reaction was no pen, got just enough on the ball, but it's the striker's touch. VAR makes the right decision.

Great composure form the big centre-back Andreas Granqvist. I thought he would lash it, put his foot through it. He keeps his head nice and cool. Fantastic penalty under that pressure.

GOAL - Sweden 1-0 South Koreapublished at 65 mins

    Andreas Granqvist

Cool, so cool from the Krasnodar defender. He rolls the ball into the bottom right corner sending South Korea's Cho Hyun-woo the wrong way in the process.

    Don't watch the eyes!

Penalty confirmed. Well that was painless.

  7. Here comes VARpublished at 62 mins

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Furious Swedish appeals and rightly so. Here comes VAR. A possible penalty for Kim Min-Woo's clumsy challenge on Viktor Claesson....

  8. Postpublished at 57 mins

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Almost a sharp riposte from South Korea. Former Swansea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng is again involved in the build-up but Kim Min-woo is crowded out on the edge of the Swedish penalty area.

    Lively this.

  9. CLOSE!published at 56 mins

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Ola Toivonen is showing plenty of aerial threat but again he lacks the direction to beat South Korea's irresistible goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo.

    Good positioning from the keeper.

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 55 mins

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Ludwig Augustinsson goes down and Hwang Hee-chan follows-up his first tackle with another nibble which earns him a yellow.

  11. CLOSE!published at 52 mins

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Close so close but still no cigar. Koo Ja-cheol connects with Kim Min-woo's searching cross but it flashes into the side netting.

Sweden's goalkeeper, Robin Olsen, had no chance if that was on target.

  12. How wastefulpublished at 49 mins

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Oh how wasteful. That was like something from out of the after work five-a-side from Sweden's Emil Forsberg, who balloons an effort from 18-yards out.

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

If South Korea get anything out of this Cho Hyun-woo will deserve a lot of credit.

The Daegu goalkeeper was exceptional in the first period with a brilliant save from Marcus Berg. More heroics might be required this half.

Right the teams are about to come back out so that's enough from Phil for now.

  17. Phil McNulty Q&Apublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

George Tincknell: What’s our Plan B if 3-5-2 doesn’t work?

PM: I do not believe Gareth Southgate will change England’s system unless in exceptional circumstances. He has decided this is the way forward and is determined to stick with it.

Dave Curtis: Do you think this is how that young German team felt in 2006. On the edge of something great.

PM:Too early to say that, Dave. This is a team that is a work in progress. Free free to ask me again in about three weeks.

  18. Phil McNulty Q&Apublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Nick Jenkins: Everyone seems a little optimistic for England to do well based on the preparation and NO drama! But at what point does quiet optimism for England to really succeed become real pressure!?

PM: I think pressure will inevitably come if/when they have a disappointing result and that feelgood factor is diluted – so hopefully not for a while.

And the other type of pressure will cone if/when they reach the last eight and suddenly fans (as they have every right to do) start to dream.

I think Gareth Southgate and his England players will settle for the latter, Nick.

  19. Phil McNulty Q&Apublished at 13:59 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Ronan Fitzgerald: For how long now will Gareth Southgate have known the starting lineup he decides today?

PM: I suspect Gareth Southgate has known his definite starting line-since the Nigeria game, when Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard played so well in the same team but will have had a clear idea for a long time – and it was starting to take shape in his mind after the March friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy when it became clear Jordan Pickford would be his goalkeeper.

He has known the system he would play for the last 12 months.

  20. Phil McNulty Q&Apublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Sweden 0-0 South Korea

Our chief football writer Phil McNulty was supposed to answer your questions via video link on the site but was unable to due to technical problems. However, we can at least bring you some of his answers in text form...

Michael Winley: Do you think that England have our best strike force in years? With Kane more prolific than most previous England forwards, along with the pace and strike-rate of Vardy, Sterling and Rashford, I'd argue we do.

PM: It is certainly very potent and has lots of variety, Michael – so yes, it is the best for some time. Kane is the goalscorer with Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling providing different types of threat but all with pace.

And the wild card is Jesse Lingard, who is a combination of threats but has that happy knack of making things happen.
