After finishing four consecutive seasons in the top eight including qualifying for the UEFA Cup, Bolton sacked Allardyce and have since been as low as League One. Allardyce went to Newcastle whose fans didn't like his style so he was soon dispatched. They were relegated two seasons later. Blackburn Rovers sacked him after he saved them and were soon down in League One. Moyes rescued Everton at the expense of Leeds United in 2004 and went on to make them a regular top six side. Everton and West Ham fans might look back on this week with similar regrets.

People show an extraordinary ignorance about Allardyce's history. Once he had Bolton established he had them playing good football. When has he been given the chance to develop that? Everton were in freefall and he saved them and got them to 8th. Now the fans want someone more like... Well, Koeman? As for 'tainted' - what, for doing absolutely nothing wrong as England manager?

That's one view on Sam Allardyce but there are others who disagree.

Here are some thoughts from those in the pro-Allardyce camp.

Ryan Joyce: A lot of people missing the point we have about Allardyce. He didn’t respect us as a club and was just taking us for a ride, laughing at us in interviews etc.

Michael Scarn: People keep saying Allardyce was brought in "to keep them up", but this is a team that spent £200m. They were never in any danger of relegation, any manager could have kept them up

This is a good point made by Jack. I'm not aware of Atletico fans complaining about Diego Simeone's style of play. Why is that? Is it English clubs who are more interested in style of play? Let us know what you think.

I hope West Ham and Everton fans were watching the final last night. Atletico is the perfect example of what a club can do if they haven't got the same funds as the top club. But if simeone was at West Ham they'd be moaning about his 'boring defensive approach' rather than how effective it is. Moronic fans.

  8. Has Southgate found answers to key questions?published at 09:45 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

The squad selected by Gareth Southgate is the third-youngest England squad ever to go to a World Cup with an average age of 26 years and 18 days.

Our chief football writer Phil McNulty has given his take on the "bright and energetic" squad, assessing whether Southgate has found the answers to the key questions.

Did he get the 'keepers right? Will the young guns be blooded? Will Loftus-Cheek add creative edge? Who will be captain? Those are just some of the questions discussed.

What is success at your club?published at 09:40 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

A successful season at Arsenal would be Top 4 finish, or winning the Europa League to get into the Champions league. Maybe add a FA cup or Carabao cup in there to make it even better. We're a way off being Title contenders. How times change.

We're expecting Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to speak to the media in Turin in just under an hour.

The suggestion is he is set to retire but could the Italy legend spring a surprise? Could he stick around for one more shot at the Champions League? Might he even leave Juventus and play elsewhere?

Jamie Simpson: Maybe as a whole the league will improve by moving on from turgid dinosaur football. Perhaps a greater degree of clubs will allow creativity to flourish and entertainment will come to the fore. Some clubs will go down. Not all can be successful. Isn’t that always the case?

Paul Anderson: It’s all about results, a good performance is just a bonus as long as you get 3 points. only an idiot walks away from a match unhappy after seeing their team win...

Trish1878: When you’re battling for survival (it’s debatable that Everton were) then of course results matter more than style. However, once we were safe he could’ve tried to adopt a more expansive football style, he didn’t because he doesn’t know how to.

As a WBA fan it's always been performance for me. I want and expect a team that tries to play football. At the end of the day, whatever division you are in it's only a game, and you are happy when your team at least tries.

Ben Corrie: "Brought in to bring stability”??? Who in their right mind sees a six month stint as stable? Either have a bad window or make the wrong appointment and they’re back in the mire. Gutted for West Ham as they have decent honest fans but sadly a board that wants to bleed them dry.

Jordan: ‘Fans expectations’ is one of the main problems with football. When I first started watching Leicester City, there was none at all. It was far less stressful. Social media has made the game less enjoyable too. Gone are days where you lose and say ‘oh well’.

  19. Atletico win Europa Leaguepublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 17 May 2018

Elsewhere last night Atletico Madrid swept aside Marseille to win the Europa League.

French striker Antoine Griezmann scored twice in a fine performance while captain Gabi added a third late on.

To make things worse for Marseille, skipper Dimitri Payet, an injury doubt before the game, lasted just half an hour before hobbling off in tears.

That has put his World Cup participation in doubt.
