  2. 'I'm not surprised we ruffled their defenders'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Brighton 3-2 Man Utd

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Chris Hughton speaking to Sky Sports on the display of scorer Glenn Murray:

"You need somebody to lead the line and put some pressure on United. You need that outlet.

On if there was surprise that the forwards ruffled the United centre-halves: "I'm never surprised. But it's the hard work of doing it and the belief of doing it.

"The result shifts the mood from last week (2-0 defeat by Watford) but it doesn't change anything. This division has become as competitive as ever. We have to make sure our level of performance has to be somewhere near to this in order to get points."

  3. 'Murray was excellent'published at 18:40 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Brighton 3-2 Man Utd

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Chris Hughton speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"I thought we were very good today. A victory we deserved. There's not a player that didn’t play well. To get that result with the quality they have you have to put in a good performance.

"We wanted a reaction from last week. Today was about getting the ball and not allowing them to get the ball to dictate the tempo. Over 90 minutes there weren't clear chances they had.

On striker Glenn Murray: "He was excellent and you need that. You know you will be under pressure and need that out-ball. Whether it's a centre forward that keeps the ball up or causes the defenders problems. Both Murray and Pascal Gross were very good.

"The squad is stronger and that's the reason we brought in the players we did. What this team have is a group of lads outside pushing for opportunities.

On the importance of winning before playing at Liverpool: "Yes, it's important we won and there are not many more difficult places than Liverpool to go. If we put in a similar performance then I'll be happy."

Matt: Brighton flying the flag for the little guy. Potential Top Four teams, you’ve been warned; smaller clubs may not have £100m players, but they’ve got passion and team spirit, which may prove to be the banana skin to your Champions League hopes.

  5. 'Attitude wasn't right'published at 18:35 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Brighton 3-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Paul Pogba, speaking to Sky Sports: "They had more hunger than us. I put myself first, that my attitude wasn't right enough. We made mistakes we shouldn't make. We tried to push and push, we kept trying, but it was a bit too late.

"We were playing at home last week and that's different. Different teams, different tactics. I know you cannot always play very very good. The attitude always has to be very good and we missed that."

Geronimo: How does Jose manage to get the worst out of players week in week out? Quite an achievement.

Kenny: 3-2 was flattering for Man United, could've easily lost 5-0. Work required in defense, transition/playing up & service to the forwards. No leaders on the pitch today, not having everyone at pre-season became very telling, credit to Brighton who outplayed them for full 90.

  7. 'Brighton had more hunger than us'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Brighton 3-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Paul Pogba, speaking to BBC Sport: "I'm disappointed, with my performance and the team performance. We didn’t deserve to win.

"I will always try. I know I lost a lot of balls which shouldn’t happen. I tried, I kept pushing, that’s my personality. I tried to help the team as much as possible. It didn’t happen today.

"Brighton prepared the game very well. Maybe we didn’t have the attitude to break them, to kill them when we had to kill them and to go through the lines. That’s a lesson we have to keep in mind.

"If we deserve to win I will say that but today the truth is we didn’t play well enough. They had more hunger than us and the result is the right one for them."

Eric: United have been POOR. Poor as poor can be. Mourinho it’s time you GO.

Andy: I can't understand as a long standing United fan why there isn't a bigger clamour for Mourinho to be sacked. The football is shocking, dreadful tactics, not the United way. There are plenty of world class players there but it's obvious they are uncomfortable playing the Mourinho way. He HAS to go and now.

D Warby: Santa and Mourinho - they'll both be gone by New Year.

  9. 'Mistakes gave happiness to Brighton'published at 18:24 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Brighton 3-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "Too many mistakes. We were punished by the mistakes. Sometimes you make mistakes and are not punished but we were punished by every mistake we made. The third goal was too hard.

"An accumulation of mistakes and punishments with goals was giving happiness and confidence to Brighton."

What about individual performances? "Look, when I speak about individual displays and am critical with my players you [the media and pundits] don't accept it. The press and pundits criticise when I go in that direction. I'll analyse my players' performances when they are very good. When I can't do that don't push me to the other side."

On the errors: "I was not expecting big mistakes. We are not speaking about small mistakes. We were punished by this. When you lose your confidence then it's the normal tendency to lose that confidence and game plan."

  10. 'We made incredible mistakes'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 19 August 2018

    Brighton 3-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on BBC's Match of the Day: "We were punished by the mistakes we made. For me that's the story of the game. We made incredible mistakes in some crucial moments. Mistakes that killed us.

"Especially that third goal - we expected to come at 2-1 with positivity - then the third goal killed us off in the second half. Our second goal came too late.

"The week leading up was good and I expected the team collectively to be better. There are basic mistakes that makes almost an impossible mission to win the match."

Poor passing? I don't want to go in that direction. I have to learn from my reality. Last season when I was critical of my team and was debating openly the performances I was criticised for being too open about my players. I will be open when they are doing well.I cannot criticise the desire of my players.

"When we scored the first goal I thought we can win this game then the third goal comes in this incredible way. Then you try to believe the second goal could give us a chance to go for it, but it was too late."

Garrence: That was the worst Man Utd performance I’ve seen in a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, long time.

    Matthew Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I can't talk highly enough of Brighton. We can see the negatives in Man United but game management across the board was great from Brighton. In every position they made great choices. They did what they needed to do to win this game . Congratulations to them.

You have to single Glenn Murray out as man of the match. Anthony Knockaert and Solly March have had good games, but in terms of game management you won't see a better performance.
