Summary

  • No Zaha in Crystal Palace squad

  • Southampton looking for first win of season

  1. GREAT SAVE!published at 33 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Great save by Wayne Hennessey, who had very little time to react before tipping over the bar.

Southampton's free-kick skims off the head of Palace midfielder Luka Milivojevic and, if not for Hennessey, it may have ended up in his own net.

  2. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 31 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Christian Benteke feels as though he should have had a penalty there.

He felt a shove in the back, but his appeals are dismissed by referee Martin Atkinson.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Saints striker Danny Ings does well to create space for a shot but he strikes his effort straight at team-mate Shane Long who was actually nowhere near to obstructing Ings' path to goal.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

We have action at both ends!

At one end, Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey fails to keep hold of a floated ball into the box although the visitors can't capitalise, then at the other, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg goes much closer to hitting the target this time - again from outside the area.

    Third time lucky perhaps?

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has to round referee Martin Atkinson to get his shot away from outside the area.

It goes well, well wide and I think the Dane was trying to blame the official.

I doubt Atkinson not being there would've made a difference.

  6. Chance!published at 19 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

A first chance of the game falls to the visitors, as Danny Ings manages to get a shot away but Palace throw their bodies on the line to stop the attempt going any further.

I was saying before how Southampton have a tendency to throw away leads at the moment. Maybe they've decided going in front is a bad tactic.

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Summer signing Jordan Ayew looks lively for the home side.

He creates room for a shot, albeit from quite a distance, and unleashes an effort deep into row Z.

    I'm counting it as a half-chance.

  8. 'Zaha's absence gives Southampton hope'published at 15:13 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Former MK Dons manager on Final Score

Wilfried Zaha was fantastic last year, I think Crystal Palace would have gone down without him. They lost every game he missed, last season, that says it all. He’s the talisman, him signing a five-year contract a coup, but I’m interested to see how they cope without him.

That pace, power, trickery makes defenders nervous. Southampton may think they have half a chance.

  9. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Aaron Wan-Bissaka makes one of his darting runs down the right flank but the ball fails to reach him.

These two sides are still getting a feel for each other it seems - and so far it's very, very, very even.

  10. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Interestingly, Mark Hughes is yet to win away at Palace as a manager in six attempts in the Premier League.

There's certainly no immediate panic for Southampton this season, but as they await a first league win of the campaign I'd say now is a pretty good time for Hughes to end that run...

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

A first corner of the afternoon goes to Southampton as Wayne Hennessey tips over the bar.

The Saints play it short and it comes to nothing at all. A steady start.

  12. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Southampton

Christian Benteke is full of running for Palace in these early stages, but Wesley Hoedt has dealt with him well to avoid any early mishaps in the Southampton backline.

  15. Lawro's predictionpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 BST)

BBC football expert Mark Lawrenson is up against BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James in his Premier League predictions this week...

Southampton have struggled and scoring goals is their major problem. The Saints have just started to worry me a little bit.

    Lawro's prediction: 2-0

    Greg's prediction: 1-0

The players are out and ready for action at a very sunny Selhurst Park.

    We'll be under way shortly.

    Match of the Day commentator

It's almost a year since Roy Hodgson took charge of Crystal Palace and transformed them from relegation candidates to an admirable 11th-placed finish in the Premier League.

His first match was a 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton, and the visitors would surely be delighted with a repeat of that score as Saints search for their first league win of the season.

Christian Benteke would be thrilled with any sort of goal - the Belgian hasn't scored for Palace from open play since January. He may fancy his chances this Saturday, despite the fact that Southampton have a decent record against Palace.

  18. What the managers say...published at 14:55 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson: "It has not been an easy start, but we don't think our performances have dropped particularly in those games.

"We won one, and that was nice, but the other two performances have had good moments. We are not short of confidence, but we know how difficult it is to get points in this league."

Southampton boss Mark Hughes: "We want to get back on track.

"We want to get that first win on the board - that's the key. It just settles everybody down and then we can build our season."

  19. Saints are no good at looking after a lead...published at 14:53 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 BST)

Over in the visitors' dugout, Mark Hughes has only won two of his 11 league games in charge of Southampton, and an immediate concern for the Saints is their tendency to surrender winning positions - last week's defeat a case in point.

After conceding in the final minutes against Leicester, they’ve now dropped 24 points having taken the lead since the beginning of the 2017-18 season and, strikingly, after going ahead they’ve lost more games (3) than they’ve gone on to win (2) under Hughes.

Something to watch out for today, perhaps.

  20. Hodgson approaching anniversarypublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 1 September 2018

Crystal Palace v Southampton (15:00 BST)

It’s almost one year since Roy Hodgson was brought in following the Eagles’ abysmal start under Frank de Boer last season - the Dutchman dismissed after just 77 days in charge, with Palace pointless and goalless after four league games.

Despite Hodgson’s appointment, Palace lost all four of their league games in September 2017 by an aggregate score of 11-0, extending their awful run to seven matches before their fortunes began to change.

For Palace to finish 11th perhaps says it all about the effect Hodgson has had on the side so far.
