Just the one shot on target to report, for the home side, but the good news for Newcastle is they're currently off the foot of the Premier League table. Huddersfield are 2-0 down to Watford at present.

The Saints defender sends a header low to Dubravka's left but the keeper is equal to it and keeps his side level going into the break.

Three minutes added on at the end of this first half.

It's yet to really get going again after an eventful opening few minutes or so but Southampton are finishing the stronger of the sides.

Mohamed Elyounoussi has a pop which sends Martin Dubravka scrambling across his goal, but it's wide of the mark.

Graham: You know it’s a truly awful match when the only thing Southampton fans have to cheer is being awarded a throw in.

That means we're still technically waiting for the first shot on target in this one.

The corner is wasted, completely.

It's that poor that Southampton are straight down the other end.

Ryan Bertrand brings the ball down the left, he puts in a low cross which finds Mario Lemina who is completely unmarked, but his clever flick at the near post hits the base of the woodwork.

Another chance good chance for Saints. But still no goals.

That's sort of end-to-end, right?

A good spell for Southampton now, and Newcastle can't clear their lines as several crosses are sent into the Magpies' penalty area.

But nobody can take control of the situation for the home side who fail to get any shot away despite the pressure.

Danny Ings goes down, he's asking for a penalty but there's no interest from referee Chris Kavanagh.

Well, this is rapidly turning into the game we feared it might.

It's all very scrappy and the home support are getting frustrated by their side's inability to keep the ball.

Southampton come forward and Nathan Redmond delivers a cross into the area, but Martin Dubravka is out quickly to catch. As you were.

Newcastle are a sleeping giant.

Any other manager might be facing the sack but it’s about hanging on to Rafa Benitez as he is the man to save them.

The home side have won just three of 17 league games so far under boss Mark Hughes.

How long does he realistically have if things carry on as they are?

Only Steve Wigley (0.69) has averaged a worse points-per-game ratio as a Southampton manager in Premier League history than Hughes (0.82).

Newcastle's DeAndre Yedlin leaves the field with a nose bleed, but the visitors earn a first corner of the match.

After a bit of pin-ball the Magpies do get a first shot away but it's sent well wide and Alex McCarthy is untroubled.

Danny Ings plays Nathan Redmond into the Newcastle penalty area and, with the angle against him, the 24-year-old blasts comfortably over Martin Dubravka's bar.

Newcastle are settling in quite nicely now and Rafael Benitez' men have the home side defending quite deep.

They had 27 shots without scoring against Brighton last time out, but they have failed to threaten so far.

To see how Newcastle are as a football club is bordering on depressing.

I can't see a future. All I see is clinging on and survival and that's not what Newcastle are about. Rafa Benitez has not been given the tools. It's not good enough.

There's not an awful lot happening at the moment, and the ball is spending an increasing amount of time in the air or changing possession quickly in midfield.

After a promising start, it has very much settled down.

Rafa Benitez is a great manager and you know what he is doing. But you need people in the box, occupying defenders. You need to be flooding that area and the style of play unfortunately doesn't allow for that.

Scoring has been the problem all season. Newcastle have actually played some decent football but they're just not taking chances.

Time for a bit of Newcastle pressure now as the visitors enjoy their first real spell of possession in the Southampton half.
