I think we can play better, I think we will play better. But I think we really need the centre forward position sorted out.

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill: "We had to dig very deep. In the first half it took us 20 minutes to get to grips with the game. We had the best chances to take the lead but didn't take them.

"Marko Arnautovic then has that quality and it is a good finish. We hit the post afterwards and we feel a bit aggrieved. We have played better but I thought the referee didn't do us any favours to be honest.

"Maybe I am a little biased but in the first half we didn't seem to get anything. The challenges tended to drop on the side of the home team. I did feel like it disrupted things a little bit.

"We didn't compete as well as we could have. We are disappointed to lose but we feel aggrieved we couldn't take anything from it.

"We have to try to compete at this level and develop young players. We are bringing new players in so we won't get too hung up on where we are [in the Nations League table.]

"It was a good test for the young players who have not played a lot of international football away from home against teams of this calibre."

  4. 'We can celebrate three points'published at 21:50 British Summer Time 12 October 2018

    FT: Austria 1-0 Northern Ireland

Austria captain Marko Arnautovic: "We dominated for 85 minutes. They had one chance from a set-piece. Other than that, we had a lot of chances which we maybe could have finished better. We won the game and it was a very good performance.

"I don't think a lot when I get the ball. I try always to do my best and score goals. Thankfully it went inside. It means a lot for me to be the captain and lead the team to a victory. It is good. We have three points and we keep going.

"We are behind Bosnia but obviously we will try to win at home and away at Northern Ireland and try to go for the group win.

"They will be hard games but now we have three points we can celebrate. I am looking forward until November."

On exchanging a few heated words with Jonny Evans: "There is always emotion. Nothing much. I play against him a lot. Nothing personal just emotions."

I don't want to be too harsh on the team, but we need to get the striker position sorted. The one piece of class in the match won it for Austria.

Jonny Evans clatters into Marko Arnautovic and it's a free-kick for Austria. This will probably be the last kick of the match.

The ball is played over the top to the goalscorer but he's offside. Time for Bailey Peacock-Farrell to take the goalkick?

Austria are just slowing the game down now. They're walking to the ball to take a free-kick and Michael O'Neill is getting frustrated on the sidelines.

It's towards Will Grigg but it's just a little too high and the ball glances off the top of his head and out for a goalkick.
