MUFC need a manager with a successful record, gets on well and popular with players, board and fans, good with the media and plays attacking, flowing football: Altrincham's Phil Parkinson it is then!

    Liverpool

Mourinho wasn't all that Klopp spoke about during his press conference.

Liverpool are currently sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table but Manchester City are breathing down their necks. What are Klopp's thoughts?

"Only City can stop City. We just have to play our own game,

"Manchester City is January 3. "here is nothing to think about yet. I am sure Pep (Guradiola) isn't thinking about us for one second in this moment."

  7. Postpublished at 14:36 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

Former Man City and England defender Danny Mills, speaking to Sky Sports: "You can't start sacking people and have no replacements coming in. It is just mayhem at that football club at the moment.

"I haven't heard Gareth Southgate's name thrown into this. I'm not sure he would want the job or if they could get him but he is the kind of manager Man Utd should look at. You might not get Pochettino out of Tottenham, even at the end of the season. They won't get Klopp or Guardiola. I've heard Conte mentioned but it didn't go well at Chelsea. Zidane doesn't speak great English and would he want to come in and build a team?

"Also, what they do need is a sporting director to sit between manager and board. Recruitment has been a big issue at that football club. To run the club. Every other club have that, setting the policy and structure."

Get Involved - Poch for United?published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

Joe Wedgwood: Poch would be mad to leave Spurs. New stadium, exciting young team, European prospects. Summer, MAYBE. Now, no chance.

Yemi: Mauricio Pochettino should replace Jose Mourinho. Simple

Kuntal Majumdar: Pochettino did not go to Madrid during summer. What makes United fans think he'd go to United now or even next summer. Managing the Spurs dressing room is much more enjoyable than that at United.

Edward Small: The arrogance of United fans talking about Pochettino and Southgate as if they'd lap up the chance. THFC are fully behind Poch and his system, he has the support of everyone at the club and the support for his decisions. United won't do that, they wouldn't for Jose.

  9. 'It has to be Mauricio'published at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

The view from the Times' Matt Dickinson is this - get Mauricio Pochettino. Just get him. At any price. The Argentine is, he states, the "perfect fit" for Manchester United.

Here is a taster: "The Argentinian’s lack of trophies is not a big stick to beat him with when he represents so many of the essential qualities of a modern coach; improving individual players on the training ground, motivating them whatever age and nationality, resourcefully promoting academy graduates, managing up and down at a club, playing a recognisable style but with tactical flexibility too.

"Exactly what United should be looking for if they are not going to limit themselves to who is available but try to use all the financial muscle that has been so questionably directed, lacking a clear plan, over a number of years."

    Liverpool

This afternoon, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has shared his thoughts on Mourinho's departure.

"He is a competitive guy, very ambitious. I can imagine the last few months were not a joy. It is not nice to face all those questions.

"But nobody can take away all the things he has won. I hope he has that on his mind as he leaves.

    "He is an outstanding manager."

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp, speaking on Sky Sports: "Where do you start? If you were looking to go to a club and do everything wrong and get sacked you do what Jose Mourinho has done. You shouldn't be going to a hotel every day. The style of play wasn't right for Man Utd. If they get beat, the Utd fans want to see their team play with flair and that hasn't happened. he has fallen out with his players and the board.

"Ed Woodward doesn't play. He has spent fortunes and given Jose everything he wants. It is not his fault that the last time Man Utd out-ran a team is against Swansea last year.

"Jose's record will stand the test of time but he is just not right for Man Utd.

"When Ferguson was at the club they bullied the market. But now other teams have the power to go get players. There is a lot of competition.

"Who wants the job? Who doesn't want it? But who can you get right now?"

More from Carragher: "I’ve been at Liverpool when they say the whole team and manager needs changing but two or three players can change things. I think there are some really good players at Manchester United.

"There are a lot of players Jose Mourinho has brought in but haven’t delivered but those two (Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez) need to look at themselves.

"The social post from Pogba was very ill-advised. Not in keeping with the mood today. It wasn’t the brightest thing to do."
