Jose Mourinho has checked out of the hotel that has been his base for his two-and-a-half year spell in charge at Manchester United.

It looks like he took the time to shake hands with passers-by on his way out.

Alf: Solskjaer as caretaker manager? He couldn’t handle it for 9 months at Cardiff, what makes people think he could make a difference in 5 months at Man United?

Ope: Is the go to guy successor for Jose Mourinho no longer Rafael Benitez? Someone needs to quickly inform them at Old Trafford!

Shaun McCann: Moyes, van Gaal and Mourinho - all hired on Ed Woodward's watch. All failed. And don't get me started on the players he's signed. Guy has to go, his record is abysmal.

    Diego Simeone

United have spoken to the Atletico Madrid boss before during previous managerial searches.

But is he the right man to follow Mourinho, given his similarly combustible reputation and functional, effective style of football?

Simeone is tactically well organised, has punched above his weight in La Liga, and is great at creating a siege mentality like legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, and even Mourinho at their best.

That's something United fans embrace - as long as it is 'us versus them' and not 'me versus them'.

    Thanks Michael.

There was a theory that Jose Mourinho's less-than-subtle jibes at the Manchester United hierarchy in the media showed that he was not that bothered about keeping his job at Manchester United.

That a well-placed journalist reporting details of how much it would cost to sack him - £24m apparently - was part of a back-me-or-sack me dare.

That is not the case. Mourinho is said to be disappointed that he has been dismissed as he was keen to continue and turn the situation around at Old Trafford.

    Who next for Manchester United?

Peter Collins: I'm afraid it is pure arrogance to believe that Poch will relocate to Manchester. He turned down Real Madrid in the summer (allegedly admittedly). I think it is hard to claim that Man Utd is a bigger job than Real.

nthrITguY: Did Man Utd missed the train by overlooking Unai Emery in summer? Won trophies in Europe, his style of football and getting best out of the squad available is well known now.

Stan Somogyi: Sacking Mourinho is only part of the problem. The whole structure of the club needs restructuring before anything will change properly.

Manchester United need to "reset" and "take stock" after sacking manager Jose Mourinho, says former captain Gary Neville.

Mourinho was sacked on Tuesday after two and a half years at the club, with United sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said the club need to appoint someone who meets the club's "key principles".

"It's about making sure the next manager is the right manager," he said. "The reality of that is they're going to have to put the right football structure in around him."

Something had to give. The club couldn’t continue like that and they have been dropping further away from the top - it has been a tough time for the club.

But look at the players and the players are not blameless – whether they like the manager or not and clearly a lot of them didn’t – but something had to give whether that was him losing his job or whether he’d have power to sell whoever he wanted in January.

Chris Blake: It isn't the arrogance of United fans in thinking we can pinch Poch based on past glories... it's that we are a global power house and have proven that we WILL back our manager financially, neither of which Tottenham can claim

Bonty Gaggins: Said it before and I'll say it again. This sacking means nothing if we don't get a Director of Football in. That's not to say that this wasn't the right decision - Jose was never going to get the best out of this group of players. Stop with the short term fixes

The club want to reset and get a feel-good factor back, with the team playing 'the United way'. Have they accepted they are not going to finish in the top four of the Premier League? If so, is this style over substance?

The next man in line will be someone synonymous with United, and who the players will enjoy working with. They will understand the demands of the club and will get the fans onside.

Assistant manager Michael Carrick and academy director Nicky Butt have been ruled out. So who are the candidates as it stands?

GG: Typical arrogance of United fans thinking they can just take Poch. As usual they are living on past glories, just like Jose

Shan: Suprising no one mentioned Allegri of Juventus. Juventus a powerhouse in Europe under him and can get the best out of Pogba as well.

Three Champions League titles in three years managing one of the biggest clubs in the world at Real Madrid. How's that for a managerial CV?

Zinedine Zidane has been linked with United since he walked out of the Bernabeu in May - and there's a train of thought he'd be able to get the best out of fellow Frenchmen Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

But there remains questions over his technical coaching ability and development of young players, having inherited a team of global superstars in Madrid.

He'd also be expensive in terms of wages - but given United have just spent upwards of £18m to sack Mourinho, is any fee for any manager much of an issue in order to get it right?

But if Zidane was the club's top choice, why would they need to wait until the end of the season?
