Arsenal are just one point and one goal behind Tottenham now. It's all getting congested at the top. The race for the top four is on.

Arsenal put in a fabulous performance today. They showed character and steel after a poor performance on Thursday.

For Manchester United, maybe it was a step too far after their exertions on Wednesday night.

I thought Arsenal had the edge throughout the whole game. They controlled it.

Romelu Lukaku's miss early in the game set the tone really and a part from that Bernd Leno wasn't tested - and every time he was he matched it.

On balance, Arsenal deserved to win it.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery tells Match of the Day: "I'm very proud of our players. They gave all they could against the best team at this moment.

"We were playing very competitive for 90 minutes and I think we deserved this victory. We can be happy today.

"We knew Manchester United could use different tactics but we wanted to impose our gameplan and I think we did that.

"Our goalkeeper is very important and sometimes the goalkeeper can save us and today I'm very proud of his work."

Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells BBC Sport: "We are disappointed with the result but looking at the performance, you cannot say it was a game we deserved to lose. We created five big chances, hit the woodwork twice. The performance was good, result was disappointed.

On Granit Xhaka goal: "It is one of them Brazilian swerves. It is a good strike and the ball moves. It is the one shot they had in the first half. We started sloppy and we gave him time to strike the ball.

"I don't think it is a penalty, that is a decision the ref had to make but Jon Moss might be disappointing when he sees it again.

"When you see the boys work as hard as they do, the attitude they show in training, today we were lethargic in the first 10-15 minutes, did not have the zip and we did not take the chances. Hopefully we will be ready for Wolves in the FA Cup next week.

"It has been fantastic so far but today is the the lowest we have been because we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs.

"We have won games we have not deserved to win and today we lost a game we did not deserve to lose."

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery tells Sky Sports: "I'm very proud of our supporters, they pushed us a lot and this is a big result and they created a big atmosphere for our players.

"They (United) were in a good moment after one result against PSG but we had a big performance and we are in a good moment in the Premier League. To take three points and get a good position for our target is very good and I'm happy for the players.

"We can use different systems and different players and today we changed the system, after two matches away. For us it is very important that every supporter helps like they did today.

"Being competitive like today for 90 minutes can give us a stronger mentality. We are going to think of the next Premier League match, against Newcastle here but that is in three weeks and now our focus is the Europa League on Thursday.

"That is a very important match after what happened away (losing 3-1 to Rennes in the first leg). I hope a lot of supporters come here and make the stadium full to create this atmosphere."

  5. 'The referee will be disappointed'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2019

    Arsenal 2-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells Sky Sports: "We started slowly, maybe a backlash from Wednesday night, but we created chances and when they get the first goal it becomes a different game.

"We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup. Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice and had five very big chances ourselves. The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty.

"We just had to go for it towards the end, but we were not really at it and it is one of those days where you have to dust yourselves down from. We have Wolves in the cup quarter-finals and it's a big game to look forward to."

On Granit Xhaka's goal to give Arsenal the lead: "David (de Gea) is disappointed every time he concedes a goal. The ball moves so strange and it looks like it goes to David's left and it changed direction, but in the first 15, 20 minutes we were too slow and never put them under pressure."

Manchester United wing-back Ashley Young to BBC Sport: "Disappointing especially when you create so many chances. On another day we take those chances and we could be two or three up at half-time. Against top teams you get punished.

On the penalty decision: "From where I was I don't think it's a penalty."

"I know the character and team spirit we have. We've turned things around - where we were in October we'd have taken where we are now, but as a club we should be pushing higher up the league."

"You have to practice this all the time and I did. I knew it would be tough, but I was really confident.

"The spirit of the team was good. We have everything in our hands and we know it will be tough to finish in the top four, but we are confident - it was important to win this game today and we have chances.

"We have a good spirit and we are hungry - we want to come back into the Champions League."
