Southampton got the point they needed to secure their Premier League survival as they drew against Bournemouth in an entertaining clash at St Mary's Stadium.

Shane Long gave the hosts a deserved 12th-minute lead with a shot that took a deflection off of Nathan Ake following Nathan Redmond's pass. But Bournemouth equalised with their first shot of the match when Dan Gosling finished off a quick counter-attack after being set up by Callum Wilson.

Long then could only hit the post with an open goal before Wilson put Bournemouth ahead from a rebound as Angus Gunn could not hold on to David Brooks' effort.

However, Saints fought back and James Ward-Prowse's low strike made it 2-2 before substitute Matt Targett headed the hosts in front from Yan Valery's right-wing cross. But Wilson grabbed his second - and Bournemouth's third - late on, bundling the ball home from close range after Ryan Fraser's run.

Despite not getting the victory, Cardiff's 1-0 loss at Fulham means the draw was enough for Southampton to maintain their Premier League place.

Eighteenth in December, one win from 15, now 10 wins from 36 and safety should be secured with two games to go. Well played, Ralph, well played.

Callum Wilson, on a hat-trick, no!

Southampton won one of their first 15 games of the season, before Ralph Hasenhuttl came in. This would be their ninth league victory in 21 games under him if it stays this way. What a job he has done. What a job.

  15. goal

GOAL - Southampton 3-2 Bournemouthpublished at 67 mins

    Matt Targett (Southampton)

A cracking header from substitute Matt Targett at the back post following a fine right-wing cross from Yan Valery has put the Saints back in front.

A hugely enjoyable game this one, Ralph Hasenhuttl is punching the air in celebration. Is that the goal that keeps Southampton in the Premier League?

    Southampton 2-2 Bournemouth

At the moment it is still goalless in the Fulham v Cardiff match, which means mathematically Southampton are not totally safe if it stays the same.

However, the Saints would be six points clear of Cardiff with a goal difference 18 better than the Welsh side with only two games left, so would be all but safe.

Chance for Danny Ings, who gets the ball off of Jack Simpson and tries to side-foot the ball past Artur Boruc. But Ings does not get enough on the effort and it is a routine stop for Artur Boruc.

    James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Another goal of interest to watching England manager Gareth Southgate.

James Ward-Prowse collects the ball 35 yards out and is able to run at the away defence. He jinks on to his left foot, getting some space from Joshua King, and fires a fine effort low and hard past Artur Boruc.
