Robin Johnson: Will be interesting to see how De Gea interprets this form - is it something which strengthens his tie to Man Utd (through loyalty or guilt), or will he see it as a sign of the time for a change?

Tony Greaves: Aaaaaaaand strikers never have a bad run of form do they?

Fair point about the Spurs game, Lee. De Gea was magnificent that day. Then again, if he was a striker and hadn't scored since then, would he still be in the team?

One or two errors in a season are pardon able but the consistency of late from De Gea is that if I were Ole I would give Romero a run in goal

    Paul J, Newmarket

De Gea has made some big mistakes but it's only a bad patch. Don't forget how he broke records against Spurs earlier in the season when United were getting outplayed and could have conceded 4 or 5 if it wasn't for him.

    Lee, Gloucester

I've always admired De Gea, but the time has come for him to move on. His mind is clearly elsewhere and with the way Utd's defence is at the moment, we can't afford a weak goalkeeper. Sell him, bring in Jan Oblak and we can all be happier.

The other thing about this debate, is how much should a players' credit in the bank be taken into account?

I mean, De Gea has been brilliant for United for a number of seasons, right?

Surely he deserves a little more slack? Or has that credit already eroded?

The Manchester United fans in the corner of the ground at the Stretford End around the players' tunnel sang 'David de Gea' as their deflated keeper made his way off the pitch at half-time.

A long time ago now but Sir Alex Ferguson dropped Jim Leighton after the 1990 FA Cup final when he felt the Scotland keeper had lost his way.

Les Sealey took over for the replay, Manchester United won and Leighton was never the same player again.

Antony Short: David De Gea needs taking out of the firing line, confidence looks to have completely gone.

Bradley Bicknell: What’s going on with De Gea? He’s gone all Karius!

Simon Harding: Information needed on whereabouts of United goalkeeper David de Gea. The guy in goal currently is clearly a celebrity lookalike.

The problem a goalkeeper has is that his mistakes are far more costly than any of his team-mates. A forward could make three mistakes in a game and they have no impact on the result. For a keeper, your mistakes are always spotted.

    Am I being too sympathetic?

You have a goalkeeper here, is it confidence, is it concentration? Credit Alonso, he thought - with the form this goalkeeper is in - he might drop this.

If i'm Chelsea now I'm thinking just shoot.

It's deflated Old Trafford, you could sense it when he made that mistake.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked on Friday whether he would drop David de Gea in light of his mounting number of mistakes.

The Manchester United boss could not have been more resounding in his backing for the Spaniard, a man he trusts, he said.

Those questions are going to be asked again now.

    That was awful.

It's not going well for De Gea, is it? For so long, he has dug United out of trouble, but it's error after error at the moment. Is there mitigation in the bounce of the ball? Maybe. But he really should be taking it first time...

David de Gea, what are you doing?

I'm not being funny, that is ridiculous. One of the best goalkeepers in the world? I could do better.

It's a straight-forward shot, it's straight at de Gea and he parries it, credit to Alonso who follows it in, but what is happening? I could stop that.

    Oh, David de Gea.

He has dropped the ball at the feet of Marcos Alonso, who is all alone to equalise. Antonio Rudiger shoots from miles out, the ball bouncing in front of De Gea, who should gather, but pats it back into the path of Alonso. With no United defender bothering to track, the Spaniard finishes from a tight angle.

Almost 40 minutes in and Chelsea have managed to touch the ball just five times in United's penalty area.

No shots on target and David de Gea, after a busy midweek shift during the Manchester derby, has not had a serious save to make.

Hmmm. It doesn't look good, but Matic can argue that it wasn't deliberate. As the Chelsea man comes in, Matic raises his arm and pushes him away. He's gone in the book. It's been a good time for César Azpilicueta, who was also pushed into a photographer by Romelu Lukaku.
