    Kazakhstan 3-0 Scotland (15:00)

Scotland manager Alex McLeish has been dealing with some blunt questions about his future.

“I’ll just continue to do my job and won’t get drawn into that," he replies at his media conference.

“There’s a lot of inexperience in the squad. We have introduced a few new names over the last year or so and it can take time, but I know we don’t have time.

“I want to get these lads playing to the level we demand on the international scene, but it’s not easy for players with no experience to come straight in.

“We played a bit slow at times. We had emphasised the need to play fast, take as few touches as possible, and we ran with the ball too much and didn’t pass it swiftly enough.

“I don’t really rank defeats. I always feel low after a defeat, but I’m pretty good at bouncing back."

George R: "So glad internationals don't particularly interest me I like seeing Scotland win but I was free to watch that nonsense and laugh. The SFA are to blame McLeish was a terrible appointment."

    Mightywell1886: "I'm finished. It's over for me."

I’ve been there myself and sometimes these results – people can start throwing out comments like 'embarrassed' and things like that, and that’s very harsh. You have to look at it in total context – it’s a really difficult night, it’s not a good performance. But at the same time we’ve got to pick ourselves up and recover. I fully expect us to beat San Marino and then we are just going to have to pull out a result in one of the other games. You can make up points. It’s all about keeping belief. We don’t want to lambaste these lads after one game.

I’d be astonished if the manager’s not in charge for the San Marino game. We’re only a couple of days away. But how long does this continue? I really don’t know but if there’s another performance like this against San Marino I’d imagine that would be it.

If I’m perfectly honest I don’t completely buy in to that. Yes, it’s a slightly harder surface and it’s not ideal, but at the end of the day it’s not too dissimilar. For the sake of one game I would have liked to have seen these players make themselves available. It’s probably clubs getting involved and there’s a lot of money involved in players getting injured. But at the same time, I think if a player wants to play for his country then he makes himself available.

Ryan Fraser and Callum Paterson were excused from playing on the synthetic surface this afternoon. Both will be available for Sunday's game in San Marino, while skipper Andrew Robertson is due to rejoin the squad after his dental surgery.

It was extremely disappointing, dispiriting. The players didn’t know where to look. There will be a lot of pressure on the manager after this. The players looked completely lost. It didn’t look as if there was a clear idea of what they were trying to do. We were out fought in the middle of the park. Over run in the final third. Their attackers caused us some real problems. Up top we looked toothless – a serious concern.

  11. San Marino strugglingpublished at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    FT: Kazakhstan 3-0 Scotland

It's now 4-0 to Cyprus against San Marino. Scotland are rocketing up the table in Group I.

Surely that suggests we'll have no trouble against the section minnows on Sunday? Surely?

Jamie McGowan: McLeish must do the right thing and resign immediately. He should never have got the job in the first place.

Johnny Dundee: For various reasons I don't think Alex McLeish should have been considered for Scotland manager. I think he should resign or be sacked after that result. No excuses.

Alan Knight: Isn't it clear that the Scotland players are not playing for McLeish? If so, then he's a goner.

It was a difficult watch. We obviously started off terribly – two goals down in the first 10 minutes and it was an uphill battle from there that we never really managed to turn around. We were almost shell shocked for the rest of the game. That wasn’t according to the plan, according to the script, and we suffered badly after that.

  14. McLeish laments weak responsepublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    FT: Kazakhstan 3-0 Scotland

Scotland manager Alex McLeish tells Sky Sports: "It was disappointing not to see a great reaction (to going 2-0 down). At half time we tried to change the system a little to unsettle Kazakhstan. They were first to the second balls and, after a good start, we just didn't get up to speed.

"We spoke about not leaving spaces in the defence. We worked on it but it never worked on the night.

"I brought the rugby team into it and their reaction last week as an example. I said 'you've got to roll your sleeves up and if you get a goal I believe you can get another one'."

"Unfortunately, the Kazakhs were a team on fire tonight."

It may all seem a little besides the point right now, but there are other matches in Group I tonight.

Cyprus are currently 3-0 up on Scotland's next opponents, San Marino, while group favourites Belgium host Russia at 19:45.

If Cyprus can find another goal, then we're no longer bottom. #clutchingatstraws.

  16. 'We never did our jobs'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    FT: Kazakhstan 3-0 Scotland

Scotland captain Callum McGregor tells Sky Sports: "We lost two goals in quick succession and that throws us off and we can never recover from that.

"We looked bitty and never used the ball well or got it to our front men quickly enough. The players have got to hold their hands up.

"We’ve got to play better if we want to gather points. We know it's a bad result and we’ve got to go again in the next couple of days. We know we’ve got to be better than that. We never pressed, we never passed it well. There’s not much that we can say other than we never did our jobs."

Well then, after just one game, a top-two finish in this European Championship qualifying group already looks improbable after defeat to a team ranked 117th in the world.

Can you take any more stats on Kazakhstan's poor record? The hosts had only won three of their previous 40 competitive matches - against Andorra, Latvia and the Faroe Islands.

This will be a big post-match press conference for Alex McLeish. His team talk is going to have to be on point going into San Marino game. He’s only got a short space of time with players that aren’t his own. Alex will say he’s responsible, but it’s the manner in which we lost which has been so poor.
