    FT: San Marino 0-2 Scotland

Scotland picked up all three points at the Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle but the manner in which the side claimed the victory will only add further pressure to Alex McLeish and his squad.

An early header from Kenny McLean put Scotland in front after just four minutes, but what followed was a long period of ambivalence from a team that had plenty to prove in front of a vocal and increasingly tormented away support.

The second half struggled to offer any solutions to Scotland's unique problems, until James Forrest was introduced to the match in the 71st minute. Just three minutes later the Celtic forward was spearheading a counter attack that ended in Johnny Russell firing the ball in to the back of the net.

Scotland have their first points on the board in this European qualifying campaign, yet the result did little to appease the boos from the Tartan Army.

The fans haven't been as vitriolic since the second goal but Alex McLeish and the players will still get stick because it hasn't been a good performance. It's a win, and that's all you can do, but the team have made it difficult.

    San Marino 0-2 Scotland

We're now within the final 10 minutes of this match and McLeish now has a decision to make. Do Scotland push for a third to try and relieve some of the criticism that will undoubtedly face them after the game or do they sit back and see out the 2-0 win?

He's got to score. Got it all wrong and went for power instead of just letting it meet his head. James Forrest again, who has that quality, picks out Marc McNulty perfectly and somehow he's put it wide from six yards. He'll be gutted.

Thank goodness. Great play from James Forrest down the right, could have played it early but waited for the right time to put the cross in. Maybe the boys can relax a bit now.

    Johnny Russell

Scotland have finally doubled their lead with a clever counter attack through Forrest.

The Celtic forward darted towards the San Marino box and played a through ball to McNulty, who left the pass for the on-running Russell to cut inside and fire in to the roof of the net.

  10. Substitution for Scotlandpublished at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2019

    San Marino 0-1 Scotland

Another change for Scotland, as Stuart Armstrong comes off for Celtic winger James Forrest.

The Southampton midfielder has covered a lot of ground but hasn't shown his usual composure and ability to break open a defence.

McLeish will be hoping Forrest can do exactly that in the final 20 minutes.

  11. Stat attackpublished at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2019

    San Marino 0-1 Scotland

As things stand, this would currently equal San Marino’s best result in the last four-and-a-half years.

The world’s worst international side have lost 1-0 to Moldova and Azerbaijan in that time without garnering a point.

It doesn’t really matter how you slice or dice that, that’s not a great stat…

A fair section of the fans have made their minds up. Will a win by four, five or six goals turn them round? With the lack of quality we've got out there, we don't look capable of that. A 2-0 victory should be acceptable, but it won't be and that's because of the Kazakhstan game.

A high bar indeed... but who has or hasn't impressed today?

The Tartan Army are becoming increasingly frustrated at this Scotland performance. Chants of 'sack the board' and booing is ringing around the stadium. A few more goals will help and the skirl of the pipes can now be heard. San Marino are difficult to break down but the lack of pace coming forward allows the hosts to track back in numbers.

    McTominay on for McGregor

Alex McLeish has made his first change of the second half, with Manchester United defensive midfielder Scott McTominay coming on for Celtic's Callum McGregor. Is the Scotland manager trying to cover up the defensive holes in his team and see out a 1-0 win?

San Marino are calling for a penalty after Berardi dropped to the floor in the Scotland box. Replays show very little contact between the San Marino player and Scott McKenna, who was applying pressure from behind.

  20. No composure... yetpublished at 18:08 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2019

    San Marino 0-1 Scotland

In typical, Scottish fashion the ball has spent more time in the air or bouncing off the pitch. Scotland are trying to add a bit of pace to their passing but the final product is still sorely lacking.
