Brighton, it should be pointed out, have defended excellently. Certainly no sign of them 'downing tools', as suggested by Martin Keown on Match of the Day.

Maybe the Arsenal legend was trying to fire up the visitors for their trip to Spurs...

The average touch positions from the first half show that Brighton are having to defend extremely deep and rely on counter attacks, but so far, so good as they are on course for a much-needed point.

Saints forward Nathan Redmond swings another beauty of a ball down the corridor of uncertainty, beating everyone apart from a sliding Ryan Bertrand at the far post.

But the left-back can't turn it inside the post, clipping the upright and going out for a goal kick.

Michael Ball: So what happened first? Shane Long scoring or Brighton starting to time waste?

Odel: It's strange but I think Spurs are in danger of being both complacent and impatient simultaneously

Mike Hayward: As a Spurs fan, I'm used to clutching at straws and seeing the positive side in the face of disappointment. Ledley King is still the fastest scoring defender in PL history, so that's something to hold on to.

Moments after being booked, and then escaping another yellow, he races clear from his own half and breaks into the box.

Spurs left-back Danny Rose - who Andone was booked for fouling - storms across with a perfectly-judged slide tackle.

Might Southampton rue not being able to double their advantage? Nathan Redmond is the danger again, shooting against the on-rushing Ben Foster from close range, the Watford keeper's touch diverting the ball against the left-hand post.

Brighton's Florian Andone has his name taken by ref Chris Kavanagh for a late tackle on Danny Rose.

Let that be a warning young man. But he doesn't heed it... goes in with his foot up on Kieran Trippier a few seconds later.

Not a second yellow for me, but some refs might have gone to the pocket...

Southampton look the likeliest to score the next goal. Shane Long has got a taste for this goalscoring lark now, heading over the Watford bar.

Off the line! Lewis Dunk comes to Brighton's rescue again, sliding towards his goal to hook away Lucas Moura's low effort from the left.

This is what I'd call 'old school' defending from Lewis Dunk. The Brighton man blocks off Son as Dele Alli tries to pick him out with an incisive ball through the middle.

Son appeals for a penalty, ref Chris Kavanagh is not interested.

Watford have edged possession in the opening 30 minutes, but have nothing to show for it. Saints keeper Angus Gunn has not had a save to make since Andre Gray's effort seconds after the opening goal from Shane Long.
