    Deadlock broken!

He's only been on the pitch three minutes, but former Portsmouth loanee Chris Maguire is the man to spark wild scenes inside the Stadium of Light.

A brilliantly hit right foot volley as it breaks to him on the edge of the penalty box from a half-cleared cross by Portsmouth.

No chance of Craig MacGillivray stopping that one.

  3. Postpublished at 60 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Portsmouth

That's more like it. Some energy pumped into the crowd all of a sudden.

Sunderland with easily the best chance we've seen so far.

    Sunderland 0-0 Portsmouth

    Great save Craig MacGillivray!

Brilliant chance for Sunderland and somehow MacGillivray has kept that one out.

It looks like it's his face that's stopped it from George Honeyman's header at the near post after a cross by Lynden Gooch.

First decent spell of build-up in this second half for Portsmouth.

Ronan Curtis again finds the ball at his feet in a wide position, he puts the ball in but Jon McLaughlin is the man to gather in the Sunderland goal as nobody is arriving in a blue shirt.

Sulaimon Adelekan: Few years ago, this was a top Premier league fixture. How times change.

Jimmy whispa: Only two seasons until the south coast derby comes back!! Southampton will either get relegated or Pompey will be in the prem!

    That's a bold prediction!

Again this game hasn't settled down.

Any slight contact between players, the referee is blowing his whistle. Soon they'll be no contact allowed the rate this is going.

He's got to let the game flow as it's diminishing the flow and excitement that could get going in this contest.

Wyke back in the action eventually.

Still no rhythm to this game and the crowd that are here voicing their frustration about it.

  12. Postpublished at 48 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Portsmouth

Sunderland's Charlie Wyke down on the deck after an accidental knock to the face from Tom Naylor in midfield.

Getting plenty of chance to compose himself before getting back on his feet.

  13. Postpublished at 47 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Portsmouth

Incidentally, there's 1,278 Portsmouth fans among that crowd figure of 26,610.

Wonder what time they'll be home after the drive back? In time for breakfast?

  14. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

Right then - we're off again.

Will there be some quality which was lacking in that first half?

Derek: Sunderland always doing it the hard way. No wonder I'm getting greyer at the end of each season.

Lee Cooke: Going entirely to plan. Keep them quiet and get the crowd restless! Perfect game plan! Up the blues!

Meanwhile over at Pride Park - Leeds United took a 1-0 lead against Derby County into Wednesday's second leg as Kemar Roofe netted the only goal in that tie.

But a major talking point was a penalty given to Derby late in the second half, a decision which was then reversed.

Assistant referee Eddie Smart persuaded referee Craig Pawson to overturn his award of a penalty to the Rams with 14 minutes to go, after Jack Harrison had been adjudged to have fouled Jayden Bogle.

    Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

    AbrahamImage source, Reuters

Our play-off semi-final action on this Super Saturday began at lunchtime with a West Midlands affair at Villa Park.

It didn't disappoint either as Aston Villa came from behind to beat West Brom 2-1 thanks to two goals in the space of four minutes.

Dwight Gayle went from hero to zero for the Baggies too as after putting them into the lead, he saw red in the closing stages for a second booking.

Conor Hourihane's thunder strike and a Tammy Abraham penalty were enough to give Villa the advantage heading into Tuesday's second leg at The Hawthorns.

It's certainly been a very even half in terms of patterns of play for both sides.

If Portsmouth want to get anything out of this game to take back to Fratton Park, their front three need to do better.

It's the same message for Sunderland really who have had a couple of half-openings for Charlie Wyke.

Composure and concentration are the keys going into the second half.
